I put down Prodiamine 65 WDG on Monday. Average soil temperature for the previous 5 days was 72. Since I knew it would need to be watered in I figured I’d put it down before the rain. We were forecast to have between 0.5” to 1” over the next 5 days, but since Monday we’ve gotten about 2.5”, and most of that was on Tuesday. Will this reduce the effectiveness of my Prodiamine? Should I reapply?

This is my first time doing pre emergent, so I don’t really know what to expect.

I think as long as it’s not one of those rains that causes pooling in your yard and could wash off some of the granules you’ll be ok. I don’t think consecutive days of rain matter. Once it’s watered in by the first one it’s down in the soil. At least that’s my understanding.

I did a spray application. Not granules. But on Tuesday we had a strong storm roll through that dropped the majority of that rain. Probably close to 2”. I had some pooling in spots of my yard. But hopefully like you said most of it made it down into the soil.

I agree with this. Don’t re-apply.

That’s good to hear. Thanks.

Pre emergent is designed to bind with the soil. It settles at about a 1/2 depth and doesn't move. You're fine.

Thanks for easing my mind. I was worried I wasted a bunch of time and money.

What soil temperature is best to apply prodiamine? I read online 50 degrees but it feels like it'll be a while before that happens.

In the fall, your winter weeds will start germinating when the soil temp drops below 70. So you want to apply just before that happens.

In the spring it’s a good idea to make a split application cause some weeds germinate when soil temps reach 50, and more germinate once soil temps get above 70.

ETA: I’m basically following Allyn Hane’s split application method for Prodiamine.

I'm in Metairie. Aren't we about 20-30 days from putting down pre-em?

I wouldn't re-apply. The recommendations by The Lawn Care nut work great for me. I backpack spray the recommended rates 3 times a year and don't have many weeds that return. Prior to using prodiamine clover pretty much overtook my lawn every winter. Not anymore. I have the occasional dollarweed, virginia buttonweed, and crabgrass (might be dallisgrass not sure) pop up every now and then and I whack those with Certainty. St. Aug never looked better.

What rate do you mix at? I'm about to spray prodiamine for first time ever.

5.2 grams/1000 Early Spring

5.2 grams/1000 Mid Spring

13 grams/1000 Early Fall to carry through winter.

Total 24 grams yearly

I find that 2 gallons of water in a backpack sprayer covers 1000 sq ft sufficiently
