I am having the worst of my 4 seasons here with the pre-existing vines. I actually have two types on the same arbor. One appears to be a normal grape that turns purple and is ripe in early summer. It had large leaves. The muscadines do not ripen to purple. More like gold. Anyway, is there a particular critter that eats these more than anything else? I have been catching rats pretty regular. I have attempted to catch them eating at night and haven't seen any in the vines. Any maintenance tips? Prune? Fertilizer?

I don’t have any tips for you although last weekend in the woods (SE central La) they were plentiful.

Also, when I was young Dad had a vine and possums were super common at night. As were rats and coons. Squirrels and mocking birds during the day.

I had a decent year, but the several weeks of constant rain followed by blazing heat did impact them.

My cur dog killed 10 or so possums this year that were getting in my dad's vines. They eat them like crazy.

I had a poor year too. Must be too much rain.

For making jelly, the purple skin muscadines are the best. There's a tart in the skin that gives it it's special taste. Scuppernongs lack this taste. I just chew them and spit em out.
