Pool heaters part II

Saw the other post about pool heaters and got me to thinking. I have a 14,000 gallon pool that I would like to have heated to extend the swimming season on the front end and back end. Pool is covered with a screened enclosure and there are many oak trees surrounding the enclosure so the pool rarely gets above 80 degrees even in July and August.
I have natural gas at the house and the gas meter is on the same side of the house as the pool pump, so if a new line would need to be run it would be somewhat simple.
So, gas or electric? Any idea of cost to do this?

I have a 400K BTU Pentair gas heater on my new build contract. Its $3700 and includes 50 feet of gas line/risers etc.
I think the gas line is about $1000 of that charge.
Not sure how that would compare to a stand alone heater job, but hope that helps.

Have a 400k BTU natural gas heater on my 15k gallon pool/spa. Heats up about 1.5 degree per hour. I think electric would take much longer in talking to friends that have electric. Not sure of exact cost of heater as was part of spa package.
I think I paid $25 per foot for the gas line and they added a few quick connects for crawfish boils.
Hope this helps. You won’t regret adding heater, we swam into December and will crack up this weekend to take advantage of warmer temps.

I bought the 400K Pentair from Pool Supplies plus .com for about $2500 to replace my old Hayward. Do NOT buy HAyward that things was junk needed a new control board every year. No trouble at all with Pentair so far.
I fell like Gas is faster and cheaper than electric, but have no scientific basis for this.

How much would you say it costs to heat up the pool? Any idea?

I have electric and the new ones are much more efficient than gas. Its basically an Outside ac/heat unit Nd the cost is the same as running an AC

Your profile says Slidell. Is this correct? Georpgraphics play a part in this. Pool only, no hot tub?

Correct, in Slidell, pool only

really? i always imagined it to be much more. if that's the case i wouldn't have a pool without a heater.

Does anyone have experience with the cost of gas? That is what I am having installed.

I can’t tell you exactly cost per hour, but my bill went from about $50 per month to like $135 in December. Kid wanted a swimming birthday party so pretty much kept the heater running all weekend for her. Wife uses the hot tub 2 to 3 times a week.
This is the first weekend I am heating the whole pool in a while. Starting at 60, and getting to like 83 or 84 to swim tomorrow with mid 70 temps.
I am guessing this will cost me about $50 in gas.
Hope this helps some

Electric and Gas cost per state
Raypak Gas estimate for pool heater
Gives a good idea of your gas bill cost.
We typically start using ours in March-Louisiana.
Set Temp for 90 and maintain that month.
My gas bill would be 350.00 for the month easy.
How to read a gas meter
You can also take a pic of your gas meter outside to get an idea of how much you used.
Then multiply that number x your gas cost per therm.
Will give you a good idea of your monthly bill or time to cut it off because cost will be to high.
Raypak ASME
I have this one.... ASME means it is for Commercial use.
I would not use anything but a ASME rated heater.
Commercial one will handle chemical swings better.
Think about the chemical swings of a public pool.
The commercial version ASME will last you longer.
Thats why they want you to buy the residential version.
Just some info as a pool owner.

I've figured mine to be b/t $15-25/day depending on the outside temp. This past month was cold and the pool added about $600 to my gas bill. I ran it almost daily b/c I swim laps for exercise. This past month was definitely outside the norm and I'm still suffering from sticker shock on the bill. The month before was only about $325 extra on the gas bill. We have a spa that adds to the usage. And I should note that I'm happy with the pool temp around 85-86 degrees, but my wife likes it closer 89-ish and that doesn't help my wallet.

You should be using a solar blanket or at least al liquid solar blanket. Aqua Blanket
It will greatly reduce the gas operating cost.

How you ever used this Aqua Blanket? Almost seems too good to be true.
Posted on 1/27/21 at 6:00 pm to nolanola
Does the Aqua Blanket actually work?

I have a blue bubble wrap style cover that I cut into 3 pieces for easier removal, plus I can take 1 or 2 out if I will only use a portion of the pool. Its a huge bubble wrap blanket.
It GREATLY maintains and or generates a lot of heat when it is sunny.
Plus, there is less evaporation of water, and chlorine gas.

Plus, plus the bubble wrap types are cheap.
