I’m looking into painting the floor of my garage.. I saw one of those kits that have the epoxy, chips and all included. Has anyone here used that or what do you recommend?

i did this. (i'll find pics)

* rent a pod or do this on a week where no rain in the forecast to put all the crap from your garage into

* do NOT skip the etching pre-step. this sets up the concrete so the epoxy will adhere.

* follow all the steps (will take 3-4 days if done correctly)

* mine held up great for several years but i moved so i cant give you the 10 year update (did this in 2010). one of my favorite projects was my DIY garage update. i just used the little epoxy kit at home depot..i think i needed 2 kits to cover my garage and had lots of speckles left over.

eta here's before & after. i had a friend help me.

the yellow flashing lights & paint colors were because i was divorced and nobody could tell me what to fricking do. the kids loved it! the lights were on a motion detector so they started rotating as soon as the garage door opened.

I used the one from Home Depot in a previous house I owned. No complaints.

Ive seen you post this before, my favorite part is the pre-divorce photo complete with couples photo on the wall. Then the after-divorce photo.

How does the epoxy kits handle cracking? I want to do this for my carport but I think I would have to seal every little crack.

i lived there about 5 years after i did this and in all of that time i only had one small place where the smooth concrete ended right under where the garage door settled that came up. it was about the size of 2 quarters placed next to each other and i'm not sure if was due to the wear & tear that close to the edge of the concrete, if i didn't do as good of a job etching when i got to that part or just the epoxy coming off over time.

at any rate, it was unnoticeable and i never saw any cracking whatsoever anywhere else.

i *LOVED* how easy it was to wipe up oil spills or anything else in the garage. i think new homes should come with epoxy garage floors and new trucks should come with rhino-lining already in the beds.

I know this is something you can do yourself, but I opted for the professional route by Garage experts and I don’t think anyone (even women) has ever walked into the garage without complimenting the floor. It’s definitely a step up. Lifetime warranty and all. But it’s expensive.

I've used 2 epoxy kits and glad I did. 1 dark gray from Sears for the border and l lighter grey for the remaining area from Lowes in 2 bay shop and it's lasted for 12 years. Did not use the "sprinkles" though.

Same here. I did my first garage myself (new construction) and it was okay, but started to come up after a few years- especially where the hot tires rested on it.

I had my current garage done by a professional company here locally, and it is amazing. Pretty expensive, but everyone that comes over compliments it. And any dirt/oil stains come right off, usually with just a garden hose and nozzle.

Goto Sherwin Williams and ask about ArmorSeal epoxy kit, you can choose any color. Follow instructions carefully though as this stuff is expensive and little room for error once putting it on.

The rule of thumb when it comes to decorative concrete or epoxy coatings is to avoid anything that the big box stores sells.

i will say if you can afford this route, its MUCH less hassle. most of those products seem to set within a day so you don't have to put your crap out on the lawn for several days while you work through the process.

but CAD being a cheap bastard and all....

Did anyone that DIYed theirs (regardless of kit directions) grind the surface or did you just acid etch to prep? Also, what about urethane after?

This Old House didn't do either, but I see that some of the companies say they do this to prep/finish.

get back in the kitchen

this is all i did and it worked out great.

eta i don't know what this old house did, but i would think the current conditions of the concrete would vary by garage so you would want to treat it to ensure the epoxy holds.

Judging by the rest of your home projects, I think I'd rather get in your kitchen

Well, we live on the surface of the sun in FL, and the floor is 12 years old... so I'd want to err on the side of over-prepping.
