I just changed the capacitor a couple weeks ago but that time the condenser wouldn't even come on. After changing it, it worked perfectly. I noticed the house was getting a little warm tonight and go outside to check the condenser.

I can hear it running but the fan isn't spinning. I spin it to see if it would catch but that didn't work. I'm thinking maybe the motor is bad at this point? But it did spin rather freely when I tried it.

Also, am I ok running the inside fan with the hvac off just to have air flow in the house?

Some condensers have two capacitors. One for the fan motor and one for the condenser. Did your capacitor have two or 3 pins on top?

You can run the inside fan without any problems.

3 pin, when I replaced it, I did see a second capacitor in there.

Bad capacitor. Go ahead and change both

I just had this problem like this… I was at work and the fan stopped running

My aunt called a big company and it was like 1300 bucks to replace the fan motor on the outside and my aunt paid it without even asking me.. called my friend I know who does AC work and said that could’ve most likely been fixed, but even to replace it should’ve been around 7 hundred

Moral of the story..

So you have a dual capacitor, and you see another capacitor. Perhaps the other one you see is a hard start.

I am betting that your fan motor heats up, then seizes. After cooling off it runs yet again until repeat. Bad motor.

Yep that is high.

If the unit is still relatively new looking, but no warranty because of admin fault,
Then it is best to go with an OEM motor.
Those are higher than a Trade pro motor. If you have an ECM outside motor, there won’t be any capacitor, AND it will be about 600 contractor cost. If they have to drive to Harahan to get it, that time & gas is figured in.

SO, job totals :

Trade pro motor & cap =. 425-450

OEM motor —————-=. 500-600

ECM motor. =. 1000 to. 1500

I noticed the ac wasn't blowing cool air around 1130 last night. When I got up this morning I cut it back on to check too see if it would die 6 back up after cooling down. It did not cut on, so I called my neighbor who works on these things.

What is your obsession with warranty? We are talking about a bad fan motor, which costs less than $150 and takes less than 30 minutes to install. This is such a common issue--why would an AC not have fan motors on his truck? So he can charge more for travel to fricking Harahan?

Because a warranty gives you a Free motor.

And only a jack leg would put a trade pro motor in a 4 year old condenser. Usually up to 5 years, the home owner can expect a Free OEM motor regardless of warranty registration .
In this case, a classy do it right tech will go get the OEM motor.

Run and go, lets see how fast we can get in& out companies, you hear the not coming back to my house stories, in person and on subdivision web sites.

Those dual rotation fit all motors are for older junky units that will be changed out in a few years anyhow. Many jack legs zip tie the rotation wires sticking out the grille.

Truck graphics don’t cut it in La hoss.
Word of mouth does.

Do you have multimeter with a microFarad (capacitance) setting that you check the “new” capacitor? I would not assume that the capacitor is good just because it’s 2 weeks old particularly if it’s a cheap Chinese piece of junk.

Also double check all your wiring connections to the capacitor to make sure those are “tight”. Your problem may be as simple as a loose wire from your capacitor changeout a couple weeks back.

Be cautious, some warranties don't cover all costs. The house I'm in had to get a fan motor replaced for the condenser (we bought it 2 years after this) and they paid for the part but didn't pay for the shipping, which was strange.

I had changed contactor in the spring and a few weeks later blew the capacitor because there was a loose connection.

That is normal . When your coil leaks all of the freon out, they will give you a coil.
The rest is on you —- all of the freon missing, copper fittings, silver solder,
pro rated torch gases , nitrogen, misc.

Had my outside capacitor replaced in May ($140), then 7 days later I had the fan motor replaced ($460).

My units have 2 capacitors. One is the start capacitor and the other is the run capacitor. Sounds like the start capacitor if you have 2. My start capacitor is brown and about the size of a six ounce can. Mine is by the circuit board on the outside unit.

Probably $25 off of Amazon and $150 for the motor off of Parts Town

Ended up being the other capacitor that I didn't change the last time.
