Woot has a Nest thermostat E, T4000ES for $135 today (Friday 2/7)
LINK

Do you recommend? Are there better options or models by Nest, or any other smart type thermostat?

My only experience with "better" thermostats are the old style programmable ones that you can set up on a seven day cycle.

Only comment I wish to share on Nest thermostats is what I gather from reading HVAC-Talk AOC forum, where questions on homeowner HVAC problem are answered only by licensed/experienced HVAC technicians - they hate Nests and do not recommend them. They have no problems with comparable Ecobee or Honeywell thermostats. Apparently they see many issues associated with Nests and solve the issues by replacing them. And of course there is the occasional pissing match of homeowners with Nests who refuse to accept the HVAC techs advice that the Nest is likely the cause of their problem. That’s all I got. But clearly many people have Nests and seem to like them with no apparent issues, but I wouldn’t purchase one based on the advice of HVAC professionals on that forum.

P.S. I was going to provide a link to the site for you to search threads on this topic but apparently the site is down following a software upgrade. They might need Chicken’s help.

I have been running in two homes, going on 6 and 7 years now, no issues, app is easy to use and schedules are easy to set up.

Don't know about the Nest, but I bought and installed this on 6 months ago and could not be happier so far.

My nest has a mind of its own. I’ll come home some days and the temp is 90 degrees. Wife swears she didn’t change the settings. I look at the schedule and it hasn’t changed. It’s totally random. Goes weeks without doing this and then it does.

It’s the cheaper of the models that has less controllability but works fine and can be remotely changed from phone just like the other models. I have the better ones in my home but recently installed this one at my moms house and have had no issues

I’ve heard the same from my friend that is in HVAC. Said Google is really only after capturing data from your HVAC systems and selling it to companies that service them. His words were since that is their focus they haven’t kept up with the competition.

He recommended the ecobee which we went with and couldn’t be happier with. It was a bit of a pain to install, but that was probably mostly user error. Haven’t had an issue with it since we got it installed properly. It will spoil you being able to adjust the temperature from your phone in bed.

Not that I'm for the passing along my information, but exactly what will some company learn? that I like to run the AC when it's hot outside?

I believe he was getting at it measuring the efficiency of the system to gauge if they could suggest repair or replacement.

Got the black and silver one and I love it. There's so much you can add to this system

I had to hook up the C line to power mine, would get stuck in a constant cycle trying to power the Nest.
The Nest will run the fan or something like that to power itself when it gets down to a certain batter power left. I dont remember specific details.

I would be curious to see what the HVAC folks had to say about issues and the ecobee differences and nest shortcomings.

One of the HVAC techs provided a fairly detailed answer to the issues with the Nest, certainly wasn’t a C-wire issue, b/c a HVAC tech, and most DYIers can fix that issue in a heartbeat. But I just can’t remember the details. I think I bookmarked his answer, but with the HVAC-Talk forum site down there is no way to get to it. Don’t know know how long site has been down, as I would look at several days per week during summer and fall, but I haven’t looked at it in a couple months during the winter. My interest in cooling issues is higher than my interest heating.

I have had a first or second-generation Nest for years and never have had any problems with it. I bought mine before any others like it even existed. As a result, I don’t know how it would compare to its competitors today. But it does everything that I need from it.
