What kind of wood do I need to use for this? They're not going to be anything extravagant. Is composite material worth it? If so, what's the price difference?

Post a picture of what you’d like. Might be able to help.

Something similar to these. I was planning on putting a chamfer on all the edges.

I wonder if the synthetic boat dock decking could be used..., won't rot and the edges are already beveled.

Use Cypress or Cedar and stain or paint to your preference.

After Hurricane Ida I built functional shutters for our house. After several conversations with people in lumber yards, I went with designer pine. It comes primed for external use. So far no issues. I was leery of warpage, none so far.

Can't tell what kind of wood I have on there now but I'm thinking it may be cedar. I know it's got finger joint splices in the lumber.

With this option, I have a friend a few minutes from BTR. He has a Cypress lumber mill. Everything is rough cut, true 1”x 4”, etc. Not finished lumber, but will cut anything. 4”x4” beams, etc. He gets sinker cypress logs out the Atchafalaya Spillway. These logs have been in the Spillway for over 100 years.

This is what I got to build mine. They’re ready but not installed yet. Waiting on hinges.

Interior like Plantation Shutters or exterior?

If exterior, will they be functioning shutters to use for storm protection, or just shite to make it look like you have real shutters?

If I were building some now, I'd use Spanish Cedar. Cypress that they sell now is garbage unless it is old reclaimed material. New growth cypress will warp/twist but not as bad as treated wood will once sun gets to them if exterior.

You ever build them out of cypress? I have, and with the current cypress being logged, they are not near what you'd expect from that species of wood.

I built a few sets for a friend very similar to the ones in the pic and a couple of nicer ones with raised panels with molded rails and stiles and some of them cupped once hung and exposed to the heat of our summer sun here in S.E. La.

I will use nothing but Spanish Cedar in the future, but be prepared to pay dearly for the wood.

The only cypress I would use in that application would be old, reclaimed cypress.
