my dad is 85 yrs old and cant pick up and hold a heavy 5 gallon gas can long enough to refill his lawn mower so he only fills them half way so he can manage.

i want to do something to help him with this but not sure what options i have

buying a lot of 3 gallon tanks would work but that isnt the best solution since he needs the five 5 gallon cans he has for use with the generator gas during hurricanes. i really dont want to buy ten 3 gallon cans if i can avoid it because he wants 25-30 gallons of gas on hand during hurricanes so he knows he wont run out

is there a contraption out there that attaches to a regular 5 gallon gas can with a hand pump so that you can just pump it out rather then have to hold it up and pour it in?

im not looking for those 18 gallon fuel station carts because neither one of us could pick that up when it was time to go get it refilled, but if i could find the hose part that fits regular gas cans thats what im after.

quick search on amazon.. I am sure you can find a cheaper version that may be hand pumped.

He might like mowing the grass, but at 85 in the Louisiana heat, it might be good to start mowing his grass for him or hire out the work.

They have one of these at your local harbor freight for $10.

ya i saw these but the reviews on them all say they are cheap crap that the pump breaks and stops working after a few uses. plus dad wants no part of anything electric or battery powered when it involves gasoline, and i can definitely understand that thinking.

right now he just half fills the cans he has, and thats working, but i was hoping for a manual type pump thats more reliable then just a siphon hose with a check valve ball like for boats

i was hoping someone here has a similar problem and could advise on which manual pumps are good and whats trash but i guess i didnt ask the question very well

agreed but he is very hard headed and wont allow it. he told me i cant cut his grass because i cut it in the wrong direction and it messes up how the yard looks

lately he always waits until 6pm when it cools off a bit to cut it though

You can try th cheap kerosene pumps. I haven't used one in 40 years but the design appears to be the same. You can usually grab them at Walmart.

Can you buy one 3 gallon can just for the mower? I rarely use gas anymore but I used to keep several 5 gallons, but also a 3 and 1 gallon can specifically for certain tools.

Maybe its a little less efficient, but the easiest solution.

You didn't mention type of lawn mower... but a bottom feed gas can like SureCan if he has something to rest it on (like top of mower). No pump to malfunction as it uses gravity. If he doesn't have anything to rest on, you can build a wooden fuel loading bench where you set the SureCan on the elevated bench, drive/roll the mower next to the bench, and fuel with the can on the bench.

My grandfather built a bench like this and added steps/stair so he could step up a few treads to set the fuel down on upper level of elevated benchtop which was only like 3' off the ground.

It looks like you already have an answer about the small fuel pumps for 5 gallon cans, so I'll throw out a different idea that is probably overkill. Does he have a truck? Maybe a transfer tank would work for him.

With transfer tank in the bed of his truck, he could have plenty of gas and just fill his mower or smaller cans directly from the transfer tank.

These are impractical for lots of people for lots of reasons, but I've been thinking about getting one for hurricane preparedness purposes since I use a 12,000 Watt gas-powered, portable generator to power my house. My plan is to have it to put into the bed during hurricane season.
