20 inches or less (that’s what she said). I have some decent size trees to tackle (up to a foot and a half). Prefer something non-Chinese made and that won’t break the bank.

TIA

Stihl FarmBoss or Echo Timber Wolf, both run 20" bars well and under $500.

Stihl Farm Boss vs Husqvarna Rancher just choose the size/power you need that fits the budget. It really is the Ford vs Chevy debate for prosumer saws. You can go down the rabbit hole and spend forever deciding but I suggest finding a retailer that does repairs close to you that you feel comfortable with and make the choice of manufacturer based on their selection and/or recommendation.

I’d recommend looking at battery powered if it’s smaller trees and not very often. It’s very nice to have a light saw to bring around.

I have a Husqvarna 455 Rancher (20in bar) that’s 10 years old and still runs like a top. Bought it at Lowe’s for under $500. Just keep it maintained and stored properly.

I am currently eye-balling the Ryobi 20" gas chain saw from HD. It comes with a case for $250. The 18" option is $199. All of the reviews on the Ryobi saws are pretty good. This will be used mostly at the hunting lease, which is why I am not looking to purchase a Stihl or Husky.

No echo timberwolf? All 3 of those are great options.

They are all also very powerful saws for someone that's never used one before.

I'd consider buying a 40cc saw if its a first time use saw and only for occasional larger trees with little bucking. If you are going to be bucking multiple 12" trees then definitely get a 50cc saw, the $100 difference is well worth it.

I like Echo.

They're good machines and don't break the bank.

I have a 20" Farm boss and a Echo cs620. I like the Echo better. Great saws with great prices

Actually a pretty good recommendation if you don’t use it often which most people do not. I have a gas and an electric one (Torx) my father in law gave me. That Torx always starts and handles up to 8” pretty easily.

I have a Stihl MS220 (battery) and it comes with their Picco chain. I'm not sure that I would use that if your planning on felling a lot of trees. That type of chain cuts smoother but its slower. I have a Stihl Farmboss when I get serious about cutting a bunch. I do like the MS220 since its great for pruning trees and things like that.

That is 100% fair the Echo saws are great arguably better dollar for dollar than S or H. The reason I am reluctant to recommend them to someone is more often than not the carb needs some love out of the box and frankly, most people don't do that for one reason or another. They also need a muffler mod to really sing. Plus, I don't like the handle.

For me I think most weekend warriors like myself are best served with a saw from a brand that they can get the best service and support in their area. It is the same for me with stern drive marine motors/outdrives I prefer Volvo but have Mercs because of better local support.

Likely true, but is husky dealer support very good in the south? I have an echo dealer by me but no Husky dealer within an hour or more. But honestly most homeowner saws would likely be best used with just the pre-mix fuel. I'll run ethanol free gas if I have it for my mower during the summer, but i try to run pre-mix most of the time. I'll use a full tank of gas in my Timberwolf maybe twice a year.
