I've researched my questions, was able to find some info from credible sources, and I'm doing the internet thing and asking y'all anyway.

I planted two second-year muscadine vines in April that have taken off great (had one small cluster this year on the female). Looks like the first freeze is coming and I'd like a direct answer on if my vines will be alright or if I need to cover them. Just looking for a little peace of mind from someone who may have done this before. The things I've read say that I should put sprinklers next to them and let them ice over but that's outside of my coonass perspective on gardening. Also not sure if one night of 30 degrees is what they are referring to.

My parents have had muscadine vines for 40+ years and have never done anything during the winter. Location N MS where occasionally it may not get above freezing for 24+ hours once a year.

In the spring if the vines are budding you would need to protect the buds from freezing or you could lose that years fruit.

The vines will be fine with doing nothing from now until spring.

I have a huge clump of muscadines probably 15 ft long and 5 ft high. Can I just chop the main trunk to the ground or do I also need some herbicide to prevent re-emergence?

I was in your shoes last year. I didn't cover, sprinkle them, or anything. All 8 of my vines were fine this year.

What varieties did you plant?

What are you trying to do? Get rid of them altogether?

You trying to kill them permanently? If so, cut off at the ground and “paint” stump and vine killer (herbicide Trichlopyr) immediately over the fresh wound. That should take care of it. If it does re-emerge repeat the process.

Wild muscadines grow like a mother with no watering, fertilizing or care of any kind, but in cultivated in my yard, not so much!

sprinklers are usually for thawing buds in spring from frost before the sun hits them. It's highly unlikely you need to do anything for vines bc they're very resilient. But you could put something like mulch around the base for peace of mind. 30 degrees is def not going to do any harm.

you could also clip a couple pieces and stick in the ground in case your main vine dies. Nothing is easier to root or grow than grape vines.

I've been growing muscadines, scuppernongs, etc for 15 years or so.

Black Beauty and Lane are hardy into zone 7 which is an average low of 5 degrees, so you a good. Muscadine grows wild up here in Dallas where its zone 7b (low of 10).

Good to know! Thanks for the help. I bought a 2-year vine and the black beauty had a small cluster of three come out three months after I planted it. Must be doing something right.

I’m half way between Laplace and Gonzales. I have ten vines and they make it through winter with no special care. They’re pretty tough plants.
