I am moving to Baton Rouge at the end of March. I am 31, male, single, and enjoy the liveliness of a city walking to bars, coffee, restaurants, etc. I am looking to rent for a year or so before I purchase a home. Any recommendations on an area to live in or an apartment/condo/house for rent? $1k - $1,700 budget per month. Is downtown BR worth a damn? I don't want to be surrounded by students but also don't want to be surrounded by old man yelling at clouds type. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks!

+1. Capital heights and garden district areas would suit your needs.

I wouldn't immediately sign a lease for a year. Look at Airbnb to see what may be available for a few weeks or month to figure out what part of the town you want to be in.

It may more expensive, but I would rather spend the money upfront than have to live in a part of town I didn't like.

For what it's worth, outside of going to the Farmers Market on Saturday's, we rarely go downtown.

In Baton Rouge, you're within walking distance of a bar pretty much throughout the entire city. Id check out neighboring towns before BR if it were me.

I have a friend who lives in the apartments above Perkins. Limited options there

Downtown has gotten better and it's away from a lot of the crazy traffic within the rest of BR. It will get old fast.

Live in Capital Heights/Southdowns/Hundred Oaks area if you want to be close to everything but might get unlucky and have an old man yelling at clouds type as some of your neighbors.

Whereabouts are you moving from? All options are likely to be closer to that $1700/month budget, if not more after fees/internet/etc.

I am from Memphis but have been living in Santa Monica for the last two years. I am moving to BR for work.

BR taken as a whole is a mess but nothing you're totally unfamiliar with if you are from Memphis. Perkins Road overpass is a good suggestion. Close to a lot of bars, restaurants, shops that you can walk to. Younger crowd but not all college kids.

Nah. I went to college in Mississippi and grew up in Memphis. Aside from the beach Santa Monica/Venice can be a grungy place.

Perkins Rd. overpass and the businesses there will be a cluster when the I 10 project starts.

You'll find a lot to do if you live closer to downtown. Government Street has been getting gentrified and there are new places to see as the years keep going by. Just need to stay mostly on the south side of Government Street and you're good. You may be able to get by with just a bike if you live downtown or in the Capital Heights area and don't need to travel for work. Not sure what your job will entail. Downtown is very limited but has the bare minimum (grocery store, gym, food, bars) and no retail shopping experiences.

Best advice here.
