I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with 197K miles on it. Changing the oil this weekend and noticed a minor oil leak. Any thoughts on some of the repair options or just let it be?

Somewhere on the top part of the engine. It’s a 3.6, very crammed in there. Very hard to see exactly. I’m going to try to pinpoint it today if possible

Sounds like it may be a valve cover gasket. If it is, it should be an easy fix. A reputable shop can do that for under 1k

probably your valve cover gasket. shouldn't be too difficult to replace. YouTube it.

It did use to be difficult! The most common goof was warping the thin-metal valve cover by over tightening bolts.

Now cost and effort depend of how many parts have to be moved out of the way before you even find the valve covers. The likelyhood of an error goes up with each part repositioned.

I bet there is some vehicle out there where the engine must be dropped before the covers can be removed.

Could be a number of things, theres an oil cooler also that could leak, spark plug tubes, cam sensor. I would try to fix it if you cant get the leak to stop. Maybe high mileage oil could fix it if it has some sort of gasket conditioning in it.

If it's a valve cover, sometimes just re-torquing the bolts is enough to stop it for a while. Some vehicles just love to leak oil, Chrysler products more so than others.

All vehicles (jeeps in particular) with 200K miles are gonna have a few leaks. Unless you are smelling it burning when going down the highway, I would do nothing.

I’ve owned many jeeps over the years. If they weren’t leaking oil, that meant they were out of oil. Leave it be and just monitor it.

Yeah, 200k miles, let her drip and keep adding when a quart low.

That model had a common oil leak problem around the oil cooler filter housing. Fix it.

They made the oil cooler out of plastic. Repeated heat cool cycles will cause it to warp and leak. When you replace it use the upgraded all metal oil cooler. Fairly easy job to do. There are plenty of youtube videos on it.
