LSU lake sinker Cypress auctions finishing this morning

This might even be better in the political forum, but I recall the "outrage" that the company that dredged the lakes in the 80s was allowed to keep the sinker Cypress he unearthed.
It was billed as an unfair windfall for the dredger that should have been rightfully regarded as belonging to the baton rouge community.
There was much self-congratulations that the current contract to dredge the lakes dictated that the sinker Cypress was deemed property of the city and was to be auctioned independently of the dredging contract.
Several piles are currently being auctioned, finishing later this morning, currently going at about $100-500 a pile, mostly without any bids at all.
Probably will end up going for quite a bit more, but I'll just bet nobody is going to retire on the final hammer price

quote:add cost of hiring a site contractor to load and haul it. They should have just given it to the dredger OR if the city wanted it have the parish load it up and move it to a stabilized yard for auction
Winning bidder must supply all equipment and labor necessary to safely and completely remove the entirety of the pile within the below described removal period. Pile is located near Campus Lake on South Stadium Drive in Baton Rouge. Pile IS NOT located at Brickyard Lane.
This is a kinda stupid way to do it

Only one sold. One hundred bucks to a single bidder

They’d have gotten several hundred per log had they been sized labeled and sorted on a limestone lay down yard with driveway access

Sounds like the city is gonna end up paying someone to haul it off

Yep
The dredge contractor is gonna say “you wanted that shite, you get it moved”

What do you do with Cyprus sinker logs?

After Rita Calcasieu parish got fema $$ to clean tributaries off of the river.
Millions of board feet of sinker were pulled out by contractors. ALL of it was burned per contract

Table tops, molding, cabinets beams. Very desirable and very beautiful.

Looks like all but one pile has been sold.

My friend lifts Sinker Cypress Logs out of the Atchafalaya Spillway. Has his own mill. Can cut just about anything.
I spent a few days helping him cut lumber. Those logs have been there for over 100 years.

That's usually the way it works out.
