Sweetheart and Hak-Ip are the best lychees I’ve tried. I’ve got both trees in my yard; although, the newly planted Hak-Ip has lost all its leaves already. Hoping it recovers. Fingers crossed. It’s been brutally dry here and lychees are always tricky.
Some think the Sweetheart are too intensely flavored. Those folks usually prefer Brewster or Mauritius.

It's amazing. I like strong flavors and this is very floral and very sweet.
My little emperor tree is flushing new growth constantly and I've only seen one leaf infected by the erinose mite in the last month since I started sulfur and abamectin. Really hoping I can beat the infestation. The tree is definitely happy with zero fertilizer and only rainwater or distilled.

Has anybody here had luck in Louisiana with dragon fruit? I keep seeing them at the home depot and am tempted to pick one up.

Have you watched any videos on the setup it takes to grow dragon fruit? Seems like an enormous PITA. Prefers a dry hot climate, needs a huge heavy trellis and large pot of heavy sandy soil.
But that's also kind of what this thread is about so if I really liked them I'd probably go for it.

you have to make a stand for them.
basically you set a 4x4 in a very big pot, with a cross on the top of it, and then train the dragon fruit growth up the post then out and laying over the top cross brace, like dreadlocks LOL.
but…they are evidently pretty easy to grow so go for it. You can sprout seeds easily from a storebought fruit. And once you have one going, you can just cut a straight frond and root it in another pot
Edit: you can also just set the post and cross in the ground, and set the pot(s) on the ground around it, training each up the post. That’s probably easier

I've been watching videos on them all morning lol. I have some big arse cattle protein tubs that I can plant one in, should be plenty enough dirt to support the trellis. Will just have to get a rolling base for it.

Please do this. I really want to see it.

I'm going check Home Depot after work to see if they still have some. This is not going to go over well with the wife

This is the way.

If you are going to do this, do not use store fruit. Get yourself either seeds or a cutting of some elite cultivar. Usually the yellow ones are considered the best.
Also, on 5/24 Gary Matsuoka's weekly YouTube video will be on growing dragonfruit. Highly recommend watching.

Got a mango box from Tropical Acres in this weekend. So far I've tried Sturrock, Edward, and lemon meringue. All were pretty much the best mangos I've ever eaten with Edward being my favorite.
Mangos and white sapote.

An old school choice. Named after Edward Simmonds who also has a Avocado and a few other fruit trees wearing his namesake.

Every single one of these that I finish I end up holding the seed and looking up 1) is it polyembryonic and 2) is it dwarf?

Wiltz... Just had Karen Michelle. My god it was so good. Like coconut fruit punch. My rankings so far:
Karen Michelle
Edward
Angie
Lemon meringue
Sturrock
Chino
3 more boxes to go this summer so we'll see what comes out on top.
In other news fruit flies started getting to my ruby supreme guavas. Lost 5 out of about 30 small immature fruit. Had to bag the rest up today in organza bags to protect them. Had zero problems with this last summer. No other guavas seem to be affected.
Lychee really greening up and looking happy.
Pride of barbados started blooming.

Been a little busy and had some catching up to do on this thread this morning. Just ordered a mango box from them as well.
I am still very much considering a trip down to the Mango Festival in West Palm. It might be more doable for me next year though.

Man, I hope they throw a Karen Michelle in the box for you. It was like eating Dole fruit punch with a strong addition of coconut. Wife and I both agreed it's probably the best piece of fruit either of us have ever eaten.
The festival looks amazing but I have a boycott on all air travel until my kids are older.

That is why next year would be better for me. I would like to drive, but I can't get away this summer. I lived in the area for a few years, so it will be nice to get back and visit for a few days. Driving would make it easier to purchase a few grafted trees at the event.

Did you grow anything interesting while you were living down there?
I'm living in the first house I ever bought so this is the first time any of this has really occurred to me. Never thought long term enough to grow these kinds of labor intensive things.

I managed new land development/golf course projects back in those days, so I was only in a place about 3 years. For that reason, I never bought. I did have a $35 million hardscape/landscape budget, so we got to do some pretty incredible things.
