Lawn edges sit much higher than the sidewalk

Recently purchased a (new to me) older home in BR. The lawn edges sit much higher than the sidewalk, as much as 3-4 inches in some places.
When I cut the grass, if I don’t raise the deck much higher, these edges scalp to dirt. I would prefer that all of my lawn edges be the same height.
What’s the most painless route to fixing this? Sod cutter, shovel & elbow grease, other ideas?
I also hate the thought of muddy edges for a while before it grows back in, but they’re just as ugly sitting so high and scalped.

Just don’t put the entire deck over the portion you are cutting. Use less than a 1/4 of the cutting deck.

As the previous poster said, move more of the deck over the sidewalk.
My yard dirt is up to 2" higher than driveway on one side - so i just move the mower more to the driveway side.

My edge is on a slope so I usually just leave a few inches on the edges and then hit that with the weedeater instead of rolling over it with the deck

You'd probably have an easier time adding 3 inches of cement to your driveway.

If you want it level just keep scalping the shite out of it. You'll get there eventually.

You'll needed to put a bevel on the edge of your yard soil at the junction with pavement that is twice the width of the mower being used. If narrower it will always cut unevenly when a lawn service does a hasty job. That's lots of work. Adding metal edging strips might be easier.

This brings up a question. It seems like lawns get higher over time.
Where in the beginning of a new build concrete driveways are much higher than the lawn but over the years the lawn catches up and even surpasses the concrete in height.
Is this a thing where build up occurs over time?

My yard is the same way. I have about 350 linear feet that I edge, then make another pass with the weedeater trimming the top. That way I dont need the mower to be anywhere near the edge.

I do mine about half and half. I have St. Aug. and I cut it 3" tall.

My guess is that you have a really bad build up of thatch, you want to fix it, you have to thin it (verticut) it, I do my bermuda twice a year you got to remove that thatch layer, I assume you have a St. Augustine yard
