Near Lafayette. Weather, after tomorrow, has lows in the 50s and highs in the low-mid 70's. Is Thursday the day to get pre emerg down?

Side question. I'm already noticing some, I guess, clover popping up in my yard. I have MSM and the, often posted, Cleggs spray. Does it matter which one of those I put down this week to kill the undesirable grass that's already popping up?

Yes - I put mine out (BR) yesterday.

MSM or Weed Free Zone + Atrazine, i.e., “winter weed cocktail” - it is fine to use either now for clover and other broadleaf weeds, provided you don’t have Bermudagrass (Atrazine will kill actively growing Bermudagrass) but I recall you have St Augustine.

Prodiamine (Barricade) or Dithiopyr (Dimension) - same as used on Centipede, St Augustine and Bermudagrass. Simazine is also an option for Fall.

For Ohio and turf type tall fescue, can I apply pre-emergent after seeds germinate? I slice seeded about 12 days ago, and the seedlings are about 1.5 inches tall throughout the yard. I’m really happy with how it looks.

But will pre-emergent effect their growth now?

I’m waiting until the soil is closer to 70 deg here in S La.

Sitting at about 76 now. So probably a week or two.

I would contact your OSU county cooperative extension horticultural agent tomorrow and ask their advice. Here is a link to the county offices. LINK

I'm also in Lafayette and I applied Barricade this past Friday. I'll probably reapply in November or so.

For guys who do Prodamine, do you only do a spray or do you apply a spray and granular?

Water-based granular. Need an Applied Mathematics degree to figure out the mix.

I follow this plan. Just need to know the SF of coverage area. This also shows when and how to split up spring into two applications, and also for Fall.

I just switched from granular to spray for the first time this fall, though honestly I prefer the ease of application for granular.

Reason - price per 1000 sq ft of herbicide application. If my math is correct, using label recommended application rates, and the price I paid for each product it costs $0.35/1000 sq ft for spray and $2.00/1000 sq ft for granular.

Granular LESCO Stonewall 0-0-7 = $2 per1000 sq ft ($25/50 lb bag @ 4 lbs/1000 sq ft)

Spray Prodiamine 65 WDG = $0.35 per1000 sq ft ($70/5 lb jug @ 0.4 oz/1000 sq ft)

I tried to double check that for you but honestly I think it's impossible.

I’m known to make errors that’s why I’m not an accountant. I had to check it a few times b/c I though that was a ridiculously low cost per application.

Here my math, a 5 lb jug of Prodiamine 65 WDG was about $70 with tax.

5 lbs x 16 oz per lb = 80 oz. $70 divided by 80 oz is $0.875 per oz of Prodiamine.

Labeled rate not to exceed 0.8 oz per 1000 sq ft per year, so split into 2 applications, spring and fall, equals 0.4 oz per 1000 sq ft for fall application.

So, $0.875 per oz x 0.4 oz per 1000 sq ft = $0.35 per 1,000 sq ft.

Here is the product I bought LINK with free shipping but they charged tax. Product Label LINK, and on page 9 the recommended max application rate for St Augustine, centipede, etc.

What is the application rate if you mix these two? I spot treated with MSM just a few days ago...should I just do atrazine or both for the pre emerg?

Ok. I have some questions.

The storm that was hanging below us all last week brought rain almost every day for a week and I haven't been able to get in my yard. I planned on cutting it tomorrow, but the rain today might have did me in until Thur.

- Would I be ok to put my pre emerg down tomorrow, even though the grass is long, and then cut grass Thur/Fri?

- If yes, would I need to water it in still given that the ground should still be moist?

- Or, should I wait till later in the week for more consecutive days of cooler temps?

- could I also spray the MSM tomorrow, in the long/damp grass, as well as the pre emerg?

Or should I just hold off until 2 days after I can cut it to do either of those things?
