Is this hvac MFD capicitor the problem?

Yesterday our A/C stopped working. The fan was not running but makes a humming sound.
I stopped the HVAC and kicked it on auto again. It started working weirdly.
But I'm thinking there might be a problem. So I'm going to replace the capicitors. what do you guys think of this capicitor?

You generally can't tell by looking, but based on the amount of rust both capacitors are old and have seen better days.
I'd replace both on general principle.

Same thing happened to me last week.
Turned down the air 2 degrees and the blower was only humming. Sucked it up and called an A/C tech and the capacitor was the problem.
And just FYI, they don't all always "bulge" when they go out. Mine looked normal but was non-functioning.
Good luck!

Yes. They are not worth much. I'm thinking of replacing them anyways. Hopefully that is the issue

Hope you grounded it first. It doesn't look too good. Worth a shot being they're cheap.

Replace with made in USA ones if possible.

As stated you can’t tell by looking at them unless it is extremely bulged, just replace both - odds are in your favor that that will fix the problem as you described it. I also recommend American made capacitors if you can find them locally - AmRad, Jared, Mars.

Disconnect check with meter. Must have microfarad

they store a hell of a charge, even when bad, so slide a screwdriver across the terminals to discharge it first.
if you ever get zapped by one it hurts like hell and most likely how the taser was invented

That’s good to know. I would have definitely got zapped

Treat any capacitor like it is a loaded gun. Even if you buy a new capacitor, just assume someone returned it and it is charged. Gotta short the terminals across any capacitor new or old before handling.
Also make sure when you short a capacitor with a screwdriver that the handle is an insulated material and is not cracked and that you are only touching the insulated handle. Also wear safety glasses and gloves.

I got zapped by a charged capacitor once. I’ll never make that mistake again.

Good opportunity to give out my favorite PSA:
Get a spare capacitor and relay for your AC units and ALWAYS keep them on hand.
Invariably these parts will go bad on the hottest Friday night of the year, and if you're without, you'll be paying instead of $20 for spares, $200 for a service call.
