Thanks. It growing through my fig tree which is huge. Should I cut it down....the elderberry?

no you should not cut it down, it will resprout even worse. It’s there because a bird shite out an elderberry seed.
Crawl up under there and pull it out by the root and try your best to get all the root. Wet the area first. Anything you leave will resprout. Elderberry is satan spawn. I’ve just about got it eradicated from under my figs but it took a while

Yes…that is elderberry. I cut several volunteer elder berry and mulberry trees out of my figs just the is past weekend. I plan to spray glyphosate on them as soon as they sprout back out. I should be able to terminate them by summer’s end that way.

Indeed. Growing everywhere. I keep it cut as much as possible. And it’s growing over my fence too bc people behind me don’t keep it up. I trim their hanging, too.

You're missing on a homemade wine experience. My grandma would make it every year when the berries were ripening.

You’re gonna spray glyphosate around your figs? Thats a bold strategy, no?

I will harvest my figs and then terminate the Elderberry.

Cutting them at the base, and then “painting” the fresh cut with trichlopyr might be a better option.

Yes, to control cut close to ground and apply "stump & brush killer". If not among garden plants dig and carefully get all the roots.
As much as I dislike EB, it does make a quick privacy screen until you can get growth on more desired plants.
Most efforts making elderberry wine got me a very purple vinegar.

It is no problem, as long as you are careful. Glyphosate only affects plants when it contacts foliage….depending on the situation, I either spray or brush it on.

You need a sealed bucket with an airlock during fermentation, then an airtight bottle after fermentation. If you do those two things, you will not get vinegar.
