Our 1977 GE refrigerator (47 years) is still going strong (knock on wood). Replaced a fan motor 10 yrs ago. No ice maker. We keep a bucket in the top freezer and fill it up every night from 4 ice trays.

Does he mean in 1996 when R12 Was replaced with R134a?
Or did he mean the new stuff that some fridges use?
R600A which isn't yet industry wide.
I don't love 600a. But 134a is good and it's dirt cheap.
Most fridges hold 4 ounces. A 12 ounce can is $11.
R12 was better but it wasn't coolant that made fridges unreliable it was the nice to replace thermostats and timers with control boards.
A timer is a $30 part. A control board can be anywhere from $160-1200 (the latter being high end kitchenaid and Thermidor)
A GE 10942 is the most common it used to be $109 , but now my cost is $211. For Oem.
Is crazy. All in the name of efficiency.

It's not a he, it's my friend that sell appliances. I asked her opinion on refrigerators. That was her reply.

Buy one, get the longest warranty plan available, hope it lasts 10 years, when it breaks throw it away and repeat.

LG got in a lot of trouble for using junk compressors a couple years back so maybe you can assume they have gotten their act together. Maybe not. Just find what suits your needs the best or get one off Craigslist if you can’t stand spending $1-5k on a piece of junk.
We got the LG “counter depth plus” because it fits our kitchen better than anything else available and has two ice makers. If it breaks, then it breaks, but there is basically no substitute, so we can live with that.

I don’t think you will find anything as reliable as a fridge from the 1970s and 1980s. Why can’t they make them like this again? But prettier.
That energy efficiency really means lighter parts... smaller, down sized, hole's in everything,... we sacrificed durability. Of course he's always hawking about appliances with dials are easily repairable and digital being incrementally more with every added feature.
Didn't help that we went double down with software.

Didn't see much in a previous thread except "Samsung and LG suck".
My experience...LG Refrigerators only suck if you have ice in the door.

Is there a refrigerator that's as reliable as a Speed Queen washing machine?
A Toyota Land Cruiser is the only thing I know of made by man that is as reliable as a Speed Queen Washing Machine...zero else comes close.

Fridges haven't changed coolant industry wide since 1996. Same year cars switched from 12 to 134a.
Some cars now use 1234yf. Some fridges use 600a.
But it isn't a total switch yet.
So I'd say that's bad advice. From her .

FWIW, after buying that OEM ice maker module from Whirlpool (no free returns), I see it's got the same Chinese factory name and alternate part numbers stamped on it as the much cheaper part on Amazon that you can return for free.
Felt like I lit a $50 bill on fire.
