Is it too early for weed and feed?

Or another pre-emergent? I attempted to weedeat some of the weeds and clover over the weekend, but after fighting the weeds, i just decided to mow the whole yard and cut it low. I'm getting clovers, weeds of all sorts, and some of those weeds that look a little like clover, but they are much taller. Tend to grow in the shadier places.

All of that being said, is it too early to weed and feed right now?

I'd suggest "weeding" and "feeding" at separate times. Go by Cleggs and by their weed cocktail and hit the weeds with it. You'll want to come back again with the cocktail in a few weeks. You generally don't want to fertilize until after your second full grass cut from my understanding.

Thanks, i just saw the post about the cocktail. And just read up from LSUAgcenter on fertilizer. The recommendation is to wait until mid april-May. The Scott's lawn app tells me Mid May.

You might just be throwing the term weed and feed out there and not meaning an actual weed and feed product. Don't do weed and feeds. You can do fert and weed control on the same day just don't use one of those prepackaged fert and weed control combos. The weed combo from Cleggs will work just fine. For St Aug/centipede I always say a good reference point is tax day. If you are fertilizing before tax day we must have had a short/warm winter or you have bermuda.

Everyone here loves to bitch about weed & feed products but I’ve used it for years with literally zero complaints. It has never made my weeds grow and has always killed weeds and grew the grass exactly like it is supposed to do. I understand the argument from the anti-weed & feed crowd but what they say is bad about it has never happened to me.

In fact, I just bought two giant 13,000 sq ft bags of Scott’s w & f from Sams for $70 and plan to spread it around half my lawn soon.

What kind of grass do you have?

I'm glad its working well for you but there have been countless occasions of these products causing harm.. Fertilizing certain grasses too early can screw them up. Maybe you have Bermuda?

Wait until April to feed. You can kill weeds all year round. I’m applying Image to my St Aug this week

I applied the cocktail when it warmed up in early February before this freeze, did great in knocking back clover and dollarweed that had emerged over the winter. I see many suggesting a second pre-em application 4-6 weeks following the first, is it recommended to run the cocktail again? I thought I may have read somewhere that it could be beneficial to switch up products?

You can spray it again. You should definitely rotate herbicides but it’s more of a yearly cycle type thing. Not one app to the next.

Think I’m going to throw down Bonus S this spring on my centipede. Hoping the atrazine will suppress the common Bermuda I see coming in here and there.

It won’t. Atrazine will damage bermuda but won’t kill it. Also, you can’t apply atrazine after April 15th.

The problem with weed and feeds is you don’t control anything. You are tied to their weed and their feed. If you have a shite ton of weeds and would like a litter more weed then you’ll over fert by opening your spreader more. If you have few weeds and would like fert a little more you’d get an over application of herbicide.

Ronk,

What is your favorite winter weed killer for Bermuda?

You mean to spray in a bermuda lawn or to kill bermuda? In a bermuda lawn I like Trimec Encore for broadleaf and certainty/atrazine for grassy.

Spray in a bermuda lawn, treat weeds and not harm dormant bermuda.

Still Atrazine? Thought you said above it can damage or is that only after 4/15 or so?

Prodiamine + Trimec would be good right now.

If Bermuda is green atrazine will damage it. If it’s dormant it’s fine.
