3 year old unit.

TXV was replaced 6 weeks ago.

This week the unit started freezing up again. Now HVAC tech says the TXV wasn’t properly insulated by manufacturer and the coils may be damaged.

Does this make sense?

I can buy that the original TXV was insulated in the unit by the manufacturer, but not the replacement. Not saying it can’t happen, but I’ve never watched a Y/T video on TXVs, and TXV replacement, and I’ve watched more than few, where the coil (assuming the evaporator coil) is damaged by a faulty TXV at least as it relates to pressures. I think I’ve seen one or a couple where the sensor bulb on the TXV wasn’t attached/anchored properly to the evaporator coil tubing and vibration of the TXV sensor bulb against the evap coil tubing caused wear and a leak.

All the parts would be covered by warranty, but you’d be on the hook for labor, and any replacement refrigerant required, unless you have a 10 year labor warranty - that’s not common.

If it’s a big enough company, and they sent out a young tech, you could ask them to send out a senior tech for a second opinion on the issue.

TLDR: it could make sense……or not. Younger techs haven’t seen it all, the older techs usually have.

Sounds like robbery. Possibly a leak where the new expansion valve was installed. Look for oil around solder joints and any fittings.
