I have a house for sale and the backsplash was replaced a couple years ago and the outlet boxes for the kitchen were not secured properly before the new stone was put up, so I have some loose outlet boxes. This has been asked to be secured. I don’t want to do a complete Jerry rig and have it fail inspection, is there a method to secure an outlet box or special outlet box for this scenario that holds into place?

Carefully bust out the old box and put in an old work box like this

Like previously mentioned, Old Work boxes were made for this type of scenario.

There are metal F straps that go inside the wall and fold back in the junction box to hold it taut against the wall.

Personally, I would replace the outlet box before installing an f Clip. After renovating a house where all outlets were secured with them, they are a bitch to work with after installed, compared to newer oldwork boxes.

If for whatever reason replacing the box isn't an option, I'd use them as a last ditch effort.

So the clips hold the box from coming out and the outlet cover holds it from going in? Is that fair? Or what secures it from moving backward inside the wall? Need to hold it someone secure/ firm?

ETA: nevermind, ok so it still have the exterior tabs obviously.

You’re going to have to remove the outlet/switch, take the old box out, place wire(s) in the replacement old work box, reinstall the outlet/switch. They make box extenders if you need to flush them with the backsplash.

Do yourself a favor and take a pic of how things are wired.

Will these work with a granite backsplash? Its counter thickness whatever that is? The ones Ive seen cut through the drywall, trying to figure out if these will work with a thick material that won't cut?

It looks like I can just add some clips to my current boxes and with a long enough screw secure them to the back of what I need? No reason to buy a new box when I can just drill a hole in the current boxes and add a clip to it right?

Some are thicker/longer than others. It'll really depend on how thick your backsplash is.

F clips are the way to go. It doesn't matter how thick or thin the wall is, just bend the excess back into the box.

Are they lose and next to a stud?

If so just dismantle (power off), run a couple drywall screws, and reassemble.

Find which side the study is on and put some sheet rock screws through the box and into the stud.

It’s counter top granite, so 1 1/4 or whatever? Plus the drywall. So we are talking almost 2 inches. Will those F clips work for that? Seems like it, but most the YouTube vids are with drywall and seems like they are mostly for drywall.

Is the box itself loose or just the plug? You'll often see this when the backsplash thickness exceeds the screw length of the the outlet. If so then a longer #6 - 32 screw is needed; something like a 2 inch.

If not well nothing hurt in asking... it's just real common. (etc - a 2AM post)

Yeah the box is loose. The outlet is good and secure to the box. I think they likely broke it loose when installing the backsplash

Negative. In my past life as an electrician, I installed a number of them in stone/marble/granite surfaces.
