How often do you change the water filter on your fridge?

It seems like the damn light turns in every 4 - 5 months. Is this necessary?

Is it based on a usage rate, or a timer?

1x per year. I believe mine is based on how many times the door is opened.

I use a much higher quality in-line filter just behind my fridge that is rated for 900 Gallons. I change it every 2 years and do not use the internal fridge filter.

I use one like this: LINK

I have a 5 year inline water filter, from Lowes, in addition to the refrigerator filter.

When you install just use a Sharpie to write that days date. Replace 4-5 years later.
