now look what you went and made me do...

Posted on 7/19/24 at 5:55 pm to cgrand
all the stuff came in, and I filled up a CO2 bottle.
I need to go get a tee for my water line and figure out where/how I’m going to mount the beer tap on the wall. Hopefully will be up and running this weekend

so I’m stuck because I can’t find a fricking 1/4” FFL fitting LOL. Maybe tomorrow…

Sounds like you jumped right in. I havent done much other than spend a bunch of time looking for a faucet for the soda water that could mount on my sink. Most what I found was bulky taps and i was hoping for something slim like a water filter faucet. I think I do need a special faucet since I've read that the carbonated water shouldn't ever see bare copper or brass since its acidic and can create a poison or something.
I like the idea of the faucet for sink to catch accidental spills or fault leaks. I've heard of some bad stories from people leaving their pot fillers over the stove dripping and come back home to a flooded floor. There is zero forgivance for leaving it dripping without a sink underneath obviously

you could just use a soda gun or a picnic tap. I’m using beer faucet. Picked up a used mini fridge that I don’t care about drilling holes in this afternoon, and found the fittings I needed.
by end of week I should be up and running

I'll look into them. Mini fridge is the route I was planning on too. I have a decent sized conditioned crawlspace so hoping to fit everything under the floor and just run a hose up to the sink area.

aight we are up and running and carbonated
got everything hooked up and no leaks detected currently. PSI on the CO2 is set at 40 for now to see how this does. I like my soda water a little aggressive
keg is chilling and I’ll check it in the AM

so there are some kinks to work out LOL
I didn’t realize the little fridge was turned down to subarctic and my soda discharge line froze up overnight. At least I know the fridge works.
and I didn’t put a check valve in the supply line (I couldn’t find one) and I’ve got carbonated water coming out the sink
ordered a valve and turned down the fridge. Once it thaws I can use it I can just close the supply line valve once the keg is full until the check valve comes in

line is thawed I have a good steady temp now and steady carbonation at 25psi. It’s glorious
Here’s some shitty pix. We’re going to make some ginger and lemon/lime syrups for squirt bottles and see how that does

1/2 cup plus 2 tsp sugar
juice of 4 limes
juice of 1/2 a lemon
1/2 cup water
dissolve the sugar in the water add the juice and bring to a boil. Cut the heat and let it steep with the squeezed citrus fruit pieces and a couple sprigs of mint. Strain into a bottle
couple of splashes into a cup of ice then a jet of carbonated water
money

so i ran thru 5 gal CO2 in 2.5 weeks...used it almost every day but only to fill cups. does that sound right? i have outgoing pressure set at 25psi...
or do i have a leak somewhere?
i checked everywhere i thought i should with soapy water when i hooked it up

I haven’t brewed beer in a long time, but I’m pretty sure my old small CO2 bottle lasted 20-30 gallons or more

obviously you meant 5lb cylinder. sure seems like you have a leak. My soda-stream cylinders last about that long with me drinking 1.5 liters per day. One of those cylinders is about 1/5 the size of a 5lb. There is also a good bit of "waste" gas with the way sodastream works. I'd think your setup would be almost 100% efficient.
Maybe you didn't get a full tank?
Posted on 8/7/24 at 1:54 pm to Turnblad85
yes 5lb sorry
I had it filled from empty at LA fire extinguisher
I’m going to bring it to airgas on airline tomorrow and have them fill it, and see if the same happens again and obviously check again for leaks. Maybe I have the psi set too high

airgas has always just swapped whether a 5lb or 20. First time I wasn't thrilled to give up my aluminum cylinder for a heavy-arse metal one but I'm over that now. They sometimes didn't have the 5lb in stock because its not a common thing. But that this is at a small location in MS.

I think you have a leak. It happens. You can force carb at a higher PSI then drop down for serving if you are worried. Did LA fire give you a new washer? I've had issues with the fittings attaching the manifold to the gas line before. The gaskets on those keg lids can be tricky too. They have food safe lube you can coat them with which helps the lid seat correctly.
