Hauling new shrubs on a utility trailer, from nursery

Has anyone hauled large amounts of shrubs using a utility trailer? Going on a road trip tomorrow to get 3 gallon shrubs. Can I expect a lot of damage? Any prep before I go? If anyone has done this, what was the outcome? Traveling to Forest Hill from Donaldsonville.

Can you cover the top with a tarp to reduce wind damage?

I feel like a flappy slap-happy tarp whipping in the wind would hurt them more than the wind.
I suggest OP just keep it under 70mph (below hurricane force winds) and make sure they are strapped in well so they don't roll over or worse, fly out and cause damage/death to other travelers.

Three gallon plants? Lay them down with the pots facing into the wind. Saves them a lot of wind burn.

Lay half the tarp on the trailer and the remainder on the tongue of the trailer, then load up all your plants starting at the front, then fold over and tie the tarp down to minimize all the whipping

Yes, about a thousand times. How many 3gal shrubs and pic of the trailer?
But yes, it is advisable to have at least a mesh tarp to cover.

Depends on what type of plants or trees. If they are large leaf tree and have already set leaves then expect a lot of loss and damage. If its a fern type plant or shrub maybe not as much. Tarps are an absolute pain in the butt to keep cinched tight in the wind on this type of load.
I rented an enclosed trailer locally for the day the last couple trips to forrest hill. Was less than $100 and well worth the money for less stress. Last time up i got 300 - 5 gal bamboo plants into a 16ft enclosed trailer and had plenty room to spare.

They have the black mesh tarps at harbor freight to allow air through without damaging the leaves too bad. Some of the nurseries may even have them for sale. Lay your regular tarp on the boards of the trailer and fold over the front so the wind will be redirected or put a row of pine straw bales or something to protect the plants from the wind. Cover with black tarp. The nursery will most likely have someone tie it for you

I think this is what I will be using. Will mostly be Hollys that I’m bringing back.

Could rent a U-haul truck

Thought about that and wish I would have done that, looking back on it now. Left this morning and once I made it past Livonia, had a blowout on trailer!!

Wow, I am doing this next week. I’m planning on using a utility trailer and building a plywood box supported by 2x4’s.

I looked into this and the cost of a truck plus mileage would offset the savings.

this ^^^^^^^
or every leave will be stripped off of them by the time you get there, and thats assuming you keep it under 40mph

Hauling them that far you really need to cover them with a tarp to prevent wind burn to the leaves, etc.
Secure it the best you can so that it doesn't flap too much and beat the crap out of them.
You must be buying them from DYN off Hwy 165, Stokes or Poole Bros on Hwy 112? Those are the only retail sellers here..... or you have relatives in the nursery business.
