Not St. Aug but I dont know what it is. I have patches of it too mixed with my St. Aug.

St Aug is a much thinner blade of grass.

Kinda looks like Alexander grass
Also, I’d sharpen your mower blades

This is Alexander grass (creeping signal grass)

See how some of them kind of curl slightly?

If I didn't know better, I'd say that was crabgrass, but it actually looks like a good yard.

Honestly, it looks like a solid mat/lawn of doveweed but I’ve never seen it that dense or thick or tall. Have you noticed it producing a purple flower? Can you pull it out of the ground by hand rather easily, compared to lawn grass? Some photos of doveweed below.

Well that’s good. I wonder if it could be carpetgrass? Carpetgrass has a seed head that looks like this

https://www.walterreeves.com/uploads/JPGs/carpetgrass2.JPG

I’ve not heard of Alexander grass as mentioned by a couple others and when I google it you get Linkedlin of a couple chicks.

Anyway, send the 3 photos you posted here to Dr Ron Strahan, turf weed extension specialist with the LSU AgCenter, rstrahan@agcenter.lsu.edu. He’ll be able to ID it for you from the photos. Post the findings on what he tells you - I’m curious myself.

I had this in a section of my yard at my old house. It is so dang thick that it actually looks nice when it's kept up, but I always assumed it was a weed.

Very curious to know what it is.

I had a large patch of this last year in my yard. Not sure what it is but I took it out with some MSM I believe.

Yeah I’d imagine MSM or Celsius would be a likely candidate to suppress. And Alexander grass is related to crabgrass, so if it indeed that, a pre emerge may prevent new ones next year. Something like barricade maybe.

Isn't Celsius only safe to use on bermuda lawns? I think if he sprayed some it would nuke his whole yard.

Celsius is safe to use on Bermudagrass, Centipede, St Augustine and Zoysia. It will kill carpetgrass.

OP - I did send your photos to Dr Strahan with with the LSU AgCenter and he could not identify with certainty without a seedhead but he said he leaned towards it being broadleaf carpet grass or Alexander Grass (creeping signal grass). If you want to leave a small area not mowed to develop a seedhead a positive ID can be made. From my personal experience with carpet grass it will usually develop its distinctive seedhead within a week, in summer, if left unmowed. Don’t know how long Alexander grass would take to develop a seedhead.

Celsius herbicide herbicide will kill both carpetgrass and Alexandergrass. But if you don’t have any desirable grass underneath you’ll likely need to re-sod your lawn, so you might want to map out a game plan before killing it, assuming that’s want you want to do.
