Just moved into a new home and the whole yard is St. Aug but there is a small section of the yard that is something else, zoyzia maybe?

1. What is it?
2. How do I get it to look cleaner/flatter. It is about 4" thick right now. I'd assume it needs to be dethatched? Do I need to wait until fall or spring to do anything to it?

If that’s in LA. That’s some mangy Zoysia

Need a a serious height of cut reset
I would cut back to 1.5-2”
Bag clippings and stay there for a month cutting at 2”.
It will look bad for a while
Don’t dethatch right now, too hot

May hit with some fertilizer if you haven’t after you cut it back

The blades will reset and will start to green up again.

Ronk schooled me on this a while back.
Most of my neighborhood has sections of this.
It is indeed Zoysia. He said Palisades.
I would scalp that shite so fast. You could have a fantastic looking lawn if you keep up with mowing

Man that is going to take some work in the beginning. Cut it down to 2 inches and bag, then verticut, then cut it down to 1 inch. Maintain at 1.5 inches.

Yes in Baton Rouge

Think it's OK to vericut now with the heat?

Thanks fellas.

Looks like zoysia to me but my Bermuda will do that in the spring if I'm gone and don’t mow for a week. Just mow more.

And sharpen your blade.

How big an area is it? Might be best cut with a manual reel mower, but you’ll need to do it often. If it is a small area, shouldn’t be hard.

Alright got it cut and bagged down to 2", raked up as much thatch as I could and this is what I'm left with. There was a tree there at some point so it's in need of some leveling. Going to get some Mason sand and try to tackle that this week.

How often should I mow? Get it leveled and maintain 2" HOC? Or go down to 1.5"?
Should I water while it's coming back or just let the rain we are forecasted take care of it?

Whatever you go down to, raise it one notch and maintain it there.
So yes, I would go down to 1.5" and maintain at 1.75"
You can probably mow every 5-7 days.
You'll know real soon!
Nice work.

I'd give it a little extra in the mornings. No one can predict our pop up T storms. It's a coin flip.

Have you fertilized?

Put down some Sta Green 20.5-0-0 ammonium sulfate I had.

Should I add any potassium?

You're asking the wrong person. I don't believe in anything other than nitrogen (other than establishing sod, seed, or sprigs).

If your grass bounces back well, then I wouldn't worry about additional macronutrients.

What's the story with the rest of your lawn? Healthy St. Aug?

Yea healthy St. Aug. The other side of my front yard has a tree that provides some shade. Would the zoysia do fine there if I switched? I would like the front lawn to all be the same eventually but I have other things to spend money on in the house rather than sod lol

Back yard is all healthy St. Aug that just needs some msm.

Yes, arguably better.

As someone who just moved and has a terrible back yard, I get it!

Download PlantNet app (it’s free) and open it. At the bottom of the page in the middle you’ll choose “identification”; snap a pic at any short distance and Choose “use photo”. Choose “leaf”. Do it as many times as you like; it’s free.
I identified Centipede grass by leaf in my yard. I took a pic of some seedheads also, and chose “flower”. It confirmed the same.
If it can’t, keep the app for other plants if you ever want to ID. Enjoy!

I'll get some this afternoon. I scalped it at 2" and put Mason sand down with a leveling rake. If I went lower with the scalp I would have cut into the ground in several spots.

It's starting to green up. Been hand pulling weeds and St. Aug runners that have been trying to make their way in.

Used mason sand to level bad spots. Will continue to add some as the grass grows though over time. No longer scalping anywhere when I maintain at 2". Plan to go lower once I get more level.
Been hand pulling weeds and St. Aug runners trying to seize their opportunity while the zoysia is thin.
Its coming back nicely though.
