I have an old (~17 years) GE top load washing machine at the camp. The issue is it agitates fine but will not spin during the spin cycle.

Tried the motor reset via unplug wait 1 minute plug in and open/close the lid 6 times

With the front off the motor moves a little but stops when it goes to spin

Belt looks fine and is on the pulleys

Lid closed switch works

water level vent tube is clear and it stops water where it should when filling

the basket is very difficult if not impossible to turn by hand in either direction

I highly doubt clothes etc are caught on the outside of the basket since the majority of the time we just do linens or towels and put them right back when they are dry so we would notice something missing. We rarely do clothes at the camp.

I am assuming at this point it is the transmission, is there anything else to check before I buy a cheap washer to replace it, I assume the transmission would be too expensive to buy, especially adding the time it would take me to replace it. I know I paid under $500 for it so I figure 17 years was a good run even though it doesn't get used constantly.

That is where I would be.

If you can even get it. We had this issue on a 31 year old Maytag.

Check this place. You may find the tranny for less than $200, maybe less than $150. It's been probably 2 decades since I replaced one but one thing I recall is those SOBs are heavier than they look. The change out is not difficult other than dealing with a heavy part in a tight and awkward space and even that may vary depending on the unit.

Check on facebook market place and such for used ones.

Here is an example of what you may find.

Are you able to check voltage on the motor during spin cycle? Maybe you’re not getting signal to the motor. Bad lid latch?

ETA. I see you already check the lid switch.

750.00 at home depot just bought one for the camp. They will deliver to the door. I paid the delivery guys to bring it and take the old one off. HD wanted an extra 100 for that service I gave the 2 guys 60.

Ignore everything else you see in this thread, find a local owned appliance dealer, buy the simplest basic Speed Queen, and be glad you spent the extra $300-400 now.
You will not regret it.

I am aware of the SQ's rep and in a way SQ actually saved me the money for a new one for the camp. I remembered yesterday my inlaws got a SQ set on our recommendation last year and I called them and ask them what they did with their old pair because they were both working when they replaced them. Turns out he put them in his shop and was going to sell them but never got around to it. So he gave them to me as long as I took the dryer as well to get them out of his way. The only negative is the washing machine is an LG HE without an agitator, but it was essentially free. Like I said it is mainly used for linens and towels at the camp so the lack of deep cleaning shouldn't be an issue.

So the problem is solved and it ended up costing me a lot less than fixing the old one.

Is there a clutch on this washer?
My old Kenmore has a similar issue and it's a new clutch that can fix it.

I think (key word there is think) the Kenmore washers were Whirlpools more often than not. However, they did often use more than one manufacturer for various models.

Could be the lid switch. It won't spin if it doesn't read the lid being closed.
It could be the mode shifter. Not sure if you have a Hydrowave or not.
If it's the GE with the control board on the motor it's maybe not worth fixing unless it's the lid switch.
The motors and shifters on those are expensive.

Kenmore can be so many different things. The fridges can be Frigidare, LG. Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Daewoo.
I wouldn't get kenmore now that sears is gone. Good luck getting warranty work done.

Washers yes they are usually Whirlpool. Sometimes LG.
