Any recommendations on insulating a metal garage door? There are several DIY kits available but looking for suggestions.

How particular are on how it looks from the inside? If you don’t care how it looks, get some styrofoam sheet insulation that you buy at Lowe’s or had and cut to fit between the frame and panels.
If you are particular about the way it looks from the inside, just nut up and buy a new insulated garage door.

I got some years ago that used stickers and mounts that held the insulation to the metal doors, but I was largely against them for the stickers really didn't hold well. Further, I had a north facing door, so it never took on the direct sun.
Maybe it helped some in the winter

Previous owners installed one of the kits with little brackets that hold standard fi burglars insulation made for garage doors. All the brackets are failing and the insulation often starts hanging off and has to be rigged in place. Our garage stays cool though and it's not air conditioned (just surrounded by climate controlled spaces). I plan to eventually replace with foam boards cut to fit and foil sheets and tape for a relatively clean look.

Do you have to replace the tension bar/spring because of the added weight?

insulated garage doors aren't that expensive. I'd just upgrade the door.

I wonder if you sanded the paint off the door where the tape went if it would hold better?
