Two days ago I noticed the water filter in my fridge was freezing and started looking around then noticed everything was beginning to freeze. The temp was set at 43 degrees so I moved it up to the highest of 45. It started thawing yesterday and then last night everything froze again. What do I need to check in order to fix this? It's a Kenmore Elite manufactured in 2008 and I'd really hate to replace it if I don't have to.

I’m not an expert, but I’d start with the thermostat

Well I started by raising it to the highest temp.

Oddly enough it can do this when the refrigerant level gets too low.

Is it a side by side?

No, fridge at top and freezer at the bottom.

Find out who makes that one. Mine from that time frame was an LG. But it was a bottom freezer, French door fridge.

If it's an LG, they are great while they work, difficult to get serviced when they break and parts are expensive. At least that was my experience.

Had this problem before but with a side by side. I believe that the tech is similar though. I youtubed it and the most common problem was the door between the freezer and the fridge breaking.

All cooling takes place in the freezer and an automatic door let's cold air into the fridge as needed to keep it the right temp. The door is Styrofoam and can fail. Mine wasn't closing all the way and freezing up the fridge. Was easy to fix once I confirmed it was the issue and ordered the part.

YouTube your brand/model and the issue and that is the most likely way to fix it. Done this for 3 or 4 appliances and it was right every time.

Is the fridge still running when the thermostat is set to the highest temp?

It's called the damper if you are searching for that part.

It can be a number of things. I know some refrigerators now will have a sticker showing where the air flow is to avoid freezing your non-freezer stuff, so check that. Make sure the seal between the doors and refrigerator are good.

Put a dollar bill between and shut the doors. If you can pull the bill out with no resistance, you need a new seal.

Mine is also doing this right now. I ordered a new thermostat to try first. I have a side by side so I’ll try the other part mentioned in this thread if that doesn’t work.
