Figured Id give this place a try.

I cleaned the coils underneath and on the back, but the fridge still wont cool down. Any other guesses before I have to pay someone to come out?

TIA

Probably not ideal but what if you drilled a small hole in between so some of the cold from the freezer could help the fridge?

Ya think?

In all seriousness, our side by side has vents between the freezer and the fridge. I assume all do.

When my fridge wasn't cooling and the freezer was, the defrost heater had to be changed. I think. Something in the freezer was causing the issue. I'm pretty sure it was the defrost heater.

There is also a damper that controls the airflow from the freezer to the fridge section. May want to check if it is working correctly and/or stuck. The damper also opens/closes based on a thermistor in the fridge and sometimes these can go bad.

You can also check and make sure the door switch is working. If they go out, the fridge will think the door is open and keep the damper closed.

Let me know if you need clarification and if you figure out the problem.

Edit: There should also be a fan to move the chilled air, check and see if you are getting airflow. If you don't feel anything, you probly have a bad fan or block evap coils.

On mine (GE signature) you had to take everything out, take the shelves out and remove a panel in the back of the freezer. It was back there.

it will be on the evap coils inside the fridge

you should be able to test the resistance from the control board to see if it's bad

The temp in the fridge is controlled by the freezer. There is a flap door from the freezer that allows cold air into the fridge. Make sure that isn't blocked by stuff in the freezer or frozen or stuck.

That, and what someone else mentioned about the defrost mechanism. It may be broken and stuck. You can usually remove the cover and turn it by hand. Sometimes, just doing that will fix it. Otherwise you may have to replace it.

That was the issue with ours - the drain plug was clogged and the ice build along the back wall and the doorway between both sides froze up. We had to pull everything out of the freezer but finally got it all working.

If it is a bottom freezer, there is a panel in the back of the freezer where it was located.

When I had the same behavior the area where the cold air was blown into the upper fridge chamber was completely frozen up.

had to change out the circuit board I believe

what happens is ice builds up and blocks the air passage between the two spaces

the fridge gets cooled but basically opening a door to let fan driven air escape into the refrigerator side. if its not defrosting correctly ice will block off that airflow

just unplug it with both doors open for 4-5 hours and let it defrost completely. if the coils were dirty it may work fine now after you let it defrost, if the problem returns, then call a repair man for it

the fan is only in the freezer section, and its up top behind the back wall near where you see the air holes. you would have to take everything apart to see the fan

Would I need to worry about water underneath after it melts?

hard to say but maybe a little depending how much ice buildup is in there.

there is a shallow plastic tray under the fridge that catches water when defrosting, its only like 1/2" deep so maybe once an hour check it and dump it out
