Around a month ago I posted a weird looking fruit attached and it turns out it was the grafted root that never got cut.

So far, my satsuma hasn't produced much fruit, while the root has produced a ton of its own fruit. I'm guessing it sucked some energy out of the satsuma?

Should I go ahead and cut the grafted root off or wait until the winter is over??

Yes - cut it now.

My satsumas haven’t produced a fraction of what they did last year - that hard freeze this past late winter negatively affected a good bit citrus production. I doubt if the sucker from the root stock was the reason for your low production.

I spent forever trying to figure that out also. The neighbors behind me have a satsuma tree and what i thought was another fruit or nut tree. Not having access to the base of the tree, i went through every fruit or nut tree and figured out it was a trifoliate orange and they never bothered to cut the suckers. Then the a-holes killed the branch that was growing over my fence so i guess i’ll have to buy my own damn tree.

But yeah, prune in early spring. That’s what they say to do but since our winters are so mild, it may not matter if you do it now vs waiting.

In line with what the other poster said, the freeze definitely hurt this year’s crop. My two satsuma trees usually produce over 200 fruits annually and I have maybe 15 this year.
