Fire Ants in Compost Heap

Yesterday I went outside an turned my compost pile only to find it was infested with fire ants. How can I eliminate them? Will dumping ant poison work or will ruin my compost/fishing worms?

Thanks. I try to turn it every day, but was only turning it once a week or so.

That is going to happen, especially if you are putting food waste in the compost. But the ants are good for the compost. They bring in nutrients which are beneficial.
If you just don't want them, turn the pile regularly, and they will eventually move on.

I put dog crap in there occasionally, but no food waste other than produce refuse such as orange peels, old lettuce, etc.

This. If you keep disturbing them, they'll move on. If you are lucky, out of your yard.
If you put fire ant killer on them, it'll kill the good stuff in the compost pile as well.
You MIGHT could use spinosad, but it also might kill some of the good things in there, not sure. Might be worth looking into.

Don't put ant poison on the compost heap.
The ants are helping to break down the contents of your pile. Turning the pile will encourage them to move on, and you can poison the piles that show up in your yard.
The ants will move up into a pile when the ground is wet/saturated, and in colder weather (pile is warm due to decay). They will usually move on if continually disturbed.

Not a desirable compost material... but certainly not why the ants are present.

Spinosad is made from a soil bacteria, so it's relatively safe for this use. Personally I wouldn't worry about it until it's closer to the time I'm wanting to use the compost.

I read that coffee grinds will make ants move.
I now save my coffee grinds and spread them on ant piles that pop up. The ants are gone in day or two. Don’t think it kills them, they just don’t like it and they move on.
Use this in my raised bed garden, flower beds and in the yard.
And it’s good for the soil.

Yep
And you can pick up free coffee grinds from any Starbucks. No charge and it is great fertilizer and gets rid of ants.

I was surprised at how quickly onion makes fire ants move. Just a thin slice or 2 on the top of the hill and next day they've moved.
