When is everyone fertilizing their grass? Is it too soon? I’m itching to do it. I already pre and post emerged. Centipede grass.

I like ronk’s recommendation of Tax Day, April 15.

I also like the recommendation of after you’ve cut your grass twice - first cut is usually to clean up weeds, but second cut is when you you actually cutting lawn grass that woken up from dormancy.

I usually target between April 1-15 for my centipede lawn - Baton Rouge. I try to time, when possible, before a rainfall event to water it in.

I already did. It really depends on your location and if your lawn is awake. I didn't push a lot of nitrogen though, I used a high potassium fertilizer.

What’s the best fertilizer to use? I plan on it towards the end of April since I just did the cocktail this past weekend.

Location and grass types? Derrick brings up a good point. When the term fertilizers is mentioned people often think of high N fert to enhance color and get the grass growing better. High potash fert is great in the colder months and is a fertilizer. High N fert should be used after the grass has greened up on its own.

I use LESCO 24-2-11 Polycoat on my centipede front lawn, purchased from Site One, at a rate of 2 lbs per 1000 sq ft (= 0.5 lbs N/1000 sq ft) per application with no more than 2 applications per year (April/June). I’d prefer 15-0-15 but the Site One store in BR only carries 15-5-15, which is too much P for my P-rich soil.

I use the same fertilizer on my St Aug rear lawn at 4 lbs/1000 sq ft (= 1 lb N/1000 sq ft) per application with 3 annual application (April. June, Aug).

Is there a formula to adjust spreader settings to meet the differing requirements per pound?

Well spreaders provide a guideline of what setting used be used for different fertilizers or granule sizes but my spreader (Shindawai RS40) doesn’t have recommended setting for LESCO products, so I’ve had to learn the settings by trial and error for the different granular lawn products I use, making 2 passes through the lawn, each perpendicular to the other. Once I dial it in I write it down in the spreader instruction manual.

This is perfect for centipede. Low salt index due to sulfate of potashand iron that is actually plant available.

You can use MSM Turf with a surfactant.

Lawn care nut

Thanks but I just bought some. I’ve been watching this guys YouTube videos. He also has a free app that’s pretty useful. I decided to try his fertilizer this year to see how it does.

You can always harm your lawn if you apply too much product. I don't know the size of your problem but spot treat it and follow the label instructions and you will be fine.

If you mix it correctly and spray it correctly you won’t burn the lawn. Spray the weeds but you don’t have to hose them down.
