Why doesn't anyone grow red beans aka kidney beans?

Has anyone ever planted red beans in a garden? I did it once but just a couple of plants in a less than ideal location... lots of shade. I am going to do it for real this year.

You probably don't have a clue how many bean pods it takes to make a 1 lb. bag of dried red beans or the amount of garden space it takes to grow the plants and work it takes to shell the bean pods, dry the beans, etc.

It's just not economically practical.

^^^^fricking this. I actually had something similar written and I guess didn’t hit submit. I know I was one pissed off mofo when I went Into Albertsons and saw black beans on sale for 1.09/lb. After a bumper crop, I had around 3.5 lbs of black beans. Juice isn’t worth the squeeze imo.

I had the same idea several years back with corn and purple hull peas. Grew up eating them from my grandpas country garden. Didn’t realize how much space you needed to grow enough to eat. I think I planted half a dozen corn stalks and a small patch of peas. After the harvest we each had a couple ears of corn and two dinners with peas. Now I stick to squash and cucumber, tomato plants, and okra in my garden.

If you like beans, give Japanese Yard Long Beans a try. They come in both green and purple varieties. I plant the green and they are prolific, grow well on a trellis and I pick them when they are between 18-24 inches long. And you'd be surprised how quickly they get to that size once they appear on the vines.

Yes. I grew them for the first time last year and half way through the summer couldn't keep up with picking them. Never had so many green beans in my life.

Yeah, they do produce a ton of beans. I love them smothered down like any other green bean and also cut into 6 inch lengths, hit with a bit of olive oil and seasoning and tossed on the grill. They are great that way too. They do not, however, pickle worth a damn. They come out pretty leathery once in the brine.

Oh, and if you haven't done it yet, give grilled okra a try, it is one of my favorites and I've not had anyone who tried it not like it. I love it fried, but due to cholesterol issues, I limit how much of that I eat. Most of my okra is pickled, grilled, steamed or smothered down for later use in gumbos and soups.

I will never grow corn again. It takes up a lot of garden space for little return. Rouses that summer put corn on sale for 10 ears for $1 and I decided it just wasn't worth it.

It's not corn season yet down here and I got corn at Rouses last week at 4 ears for $1 and it was some good stuff.

Yeah I could see that. Have you tried picking them earlier when small and pickling?

Grilled okra is my favorite over fried. I just slice them down the middle and do it the same way you do the green beans on the grill.

Those type of “shelling beans” are much more popular in the north, because their growing season is so short. Those folks put up the dried beans so they have something that outlasts their growing season.

Down here, we have such a great growing time period for fresh style beans ie pole beans, and bush beans until it gets mega hot. Just a garden culture difference. Up north those folks may not even get a full pole bean crop in. Most of those varieties are 90+ days to maturity, then another 30+ of harvest time.

No, but I also grow bush type green beans and use them for pickling and soybeans to eat as edamame.

Last year I had a 50 ft. row double planted with soybeans and got a 5 gallon bucket full by the time I picked them. Each plant probably averaged about 20 soybean pods.
