I just moved into a new house and trying to diagnose some electrical problems. So I have 2 receptacles in garage area not working at all. They are not by each other. There is one receptacle in between getting power but the two on each side are not. Tested the wires and no power. One receptacle only has one set of wires going to it so I’m assuming it’s the last in line on that circuit. Why would it not be getting power?. I tested gfci in garage and it’s not bad. Any idea what I could check next. The other two receptacles are on front porch and cannot figure those out either but let’s start with garage first

Bad fuse that powers those outlets or damage inside the wall. Start with the fuse

Sound like a multiwire branch circuit like you often see in kitchens. This would mean there are two breakers. The outlets would be wired using 12/3 or 14/3 wire. It is two branches that share a common neutral wired out of phase. It is easy to have a situation where every other outlet is not energized in these types of circuits. It is possible the GFCI was a retrofit to sell the house as you would need 2 different GFCI outlets to wire this type of circuit. The breakers on a circuit like this should have a physical trip tie.

Trace wiring up into attic if possible.

Cut the power to the gfci remove the plate and pull it out where you can see it. I had one that worked but was messed up and would not power the other outlets. It had a burnt spot on it and you could see and smell it got hot but still worked. You may need to do the same the the other outlets as well just to rule them out.

Gotcha.

Are you sure none of them are switched? Just trying to rule out the easy stuff.

Does it matter on a 15 yr old house that the wires are pushed in the back and not curled around the nut? Would that make a difference?

Most "good" electricians don't back stick and while it could be the issue it is unlikely.

Is there three-conductor cable (not counting the ground) going to each of the outlets or only two conductor?

You may have a receptacle covered up in the sheet rock that was never caught on the punch out

ETA scratch what I said. I didn’t see you said the house was built in 2005

Do the receptacles look new ? Maybe someone install new receptacles and didn’t tight the wires on the one that feeds the ones not working. I would check all the receptacles around the ones not working.

Pull the outlets out of the wall and check power on the wires themselves. Ive had a few instances where the old receptacle itself was bad and just needed to be replaced.

I checked all the surrounding ones and they look connected properly

Did that on the garage ones. That is my main issue. Wires have no power

Rules out the multi-wire branch circuit.

I assume you have ensured you have no breakers tripped in the load center sometimes you get those sneaky ones that don't look tripped but are.

Have you removed the working outlets in the garage to make sure you don't have wires that have been capped off or loose back sticks?
