Does your gas company install lines to appliances/patio for free?

Mine used to (did my indoor fireplace for free) and we're building an outdoor fire pit I want to run a line to and they've changed policy. Asking minimum $500 for the labor.
Pissed me off. Just curious if that's normal.

They don’t run anything for free (Atmos). You have to get a plumber to run it. Only thing they did for free was set the meter on the street and by the house, I have a very long run. All else was done by a plumber

Plumber will do that. Not for free.

It would take some time for them to recoup their investment from the amount of gas a fire pit would use. Kinda surprised they did the fireplace for free.

That generally requires a permit, which isn't free. I'm shocked they did any type of hookup in the past for free.
