Had some electrical work completed yesterday at my house. They rerouted a fuse box out of a bedroom closet to a circuit breaker on the other side of the house. They sealed off the old fuse box when they were finished.

I'm noticing a slight motor oil-like smell around where the fuse box was. I wouldn't describe it as burnt plastic, but I'm still a bit alarmed. There's no heat on the metal cover of where the fuse box used to be.

Is this a normal "new wire" smell or something to be concerned about?

Edit - It's my furnace.

There isn't. It could possibly be whatever adhesives they used, if any?

It's not. I just heard back from the electrician, and he said there's a very strong gas smell in the crawlspace. I think the furnace isn't venting correctly.

I had birds fill my furnace vent pipe with garbage trying to build a nest. You may want to check that.

Sometimes wire and breakers with a heavy load will put off a fishy smell. Like a bad vagina smell.

You probably have a small gas leak in one of the joints in the gas pipes. If you call the gas company they will cut you off with quickness. The gas company will require a licensed plumber to fix the leak, do a pressure test, and maybe have the city sign off on the pressure test before turning your gas back on. Call a plumber and avoid the hassle and extra expense of involving the gas company.
