Has anyone had a culvert installed to cover a ditch? I have a steep ditch that is very difficult to keep maintained. I'm considering having it culverted and covered to level the yard better at the road. Half of the houses down my street are like this while the other half are like mine.

About 100 linear feet in length. Would I need a yard drain at the mid point?

Not sure where you are and assuming the ditch is publicly maintained but call your local parish/county public works department. They usually will come out and set grade pins/elevations to let you know exactly how it needs to be installed. They would be able to tell you what you would need.

Yeah you will probably need approval from Parish/City DPW/Engineering dept. Specifically on sizing of pipe so that ditch doesn't bottleneck and flood.

We were looking into getting ours done a few years ago. We require 34" pipe, at 100 ft length minus driveway, with two catch basins. Before covid it was priced at about $5,500 to get it done. Can't imagine what it would cost now.

My neighborhood is this way as well. I was wondering if the HOA could reject me putting in a culvert. I have not seen anything in the bylaws about it though.

To do it right the pipe needs to be properly sized. I’m assuming you already have pipe underneath your driveway. I’m assuming that pipe is at the proper elevation.

If so you’d need to continue on with that size pipe at that same elevation with a slope in the proper direction.

Now the water that falls in your yard or in your street needs to have a way to get into your new pipe. Depending the exact layout and distance, you would need a catch basin or two or three depending on the circumstances.

Backfill the pipe such that you leave a slight swale to allow water to glow into your catch basins.

You will probably need to buy a permit first. What size do you need?
