These days I think it’s better to find a house that already has one.

Would be ideal if I didn't have a 2.5% interest rate on my current house. Buying a new house with a pool would probably be a net loss, unfortunately.

It's definitely cheaper. A pool is a maintenance item and a constant. We had our second pool built 3 years ago, and I personally won't own a home without a pool lord willing. It's not for everyone though. But there's nothing more refreshing than mowing the year, grabbing a beer and cooling off in the pool.

Also, with existing equipment vs. new. There is a substantial difference. But, the equipment is a negligible cost compared to building the thing new. Buying existing and upgrading the equipment is probably a more cost conscious decision. I also personally wouldn't want a pool where the builder cheaped out on certain aspects.

Hard to say definitively. I have a commercial account with one of the big pool store brands and buy 100 pounds if chlorine. Its price is $700 in the stores but I get it for around $250. I get one or two per year. I clocked my electricity usage for two years before and two years after and the monthly consumption is about $40 to $50 more per month with a variable speed pump. Acid and soda ash are negligible. Maybe $50 a year on those items. Other than that, I have to add water once or twice a month. Im on a well so water is a non item.

Cost wise, a pool sneaks up on you. It's the general maintenance items that you don't think anything about that add up. Pump electricity and water are non factors in my opinion but they will go up, it's negligible though. I have a pool and hot tub and really can't tell the difference.

So lets clear the air, there is no such thing as a non chlorine pool. I'll restate, they do have some alternatives that are more holistic but they are not effective (permasalt system).

You have 3 options; you can add chlorine in liquid form, solid form, or generate your chlorine via a saltwater generator. I do not have experience with solid chlorine, or tablets, I steered clear from them as they can and will eventually impact your CYA. With liquid chlorine in a 18k gallon pool I was purchasing 9 gallons of chlorine every 2 weeks throughout the summer to maintain ideal pool chemistry. That's a cost of about 15 dollars a week in chlorine, add it up over the summer months, that's about 300 in chlorine. Not crazy, but you also have start up and closing, you'll easily spend north of 500 on chlorine.

A salt water generator is as close to a one time purchase as a pool gets. It will generate chlorine for your pool so you will not have to purchase any, but you will need to purchase the generator which is over 1k and of course the salt to get everything going. It will pay for itself and make things very easy maintenance wise. When I had liquid chlorine I had to test and add to the pool nearly daily. Now that I have a saltwater generator I go weeks without even testing it.

I get the 8’ one for $50 and it works wonderful. Used to empty and fill it with the hose but splashed for the lil lady and bought a filter now.! Perfect to lay back in and watch the clouds go buy. Has a built in pillow.

Friend of ours had theirs done last year I believe, in the Prairieville area, and I think theirs was around $80k. I think it has a hot tub with it.

Unfortunately, the sun and I don't have the relationship we had when I was a lot younger. If we had a pool, it would be a late evening, night time thing for me.

Hopefully you informed all the other posters in this thread of that as well! That’s why I specifically mentioned the year it was done.
