Looking at replacing 20+ yr old gas lawnmower w/ a cordless... If I do that do I need to turn in my man card? Smallish yard in town that the newer cordless (e.g., 40V or two 20V battery) mowers will handle. Anyone w/ any experience w/ them? Leaning towards the dewalt model w/ two 10 amp/hr 20v batteries. Have lots of dewalt cordless tools that batteries support so its a win there
Full disclosure - I work for an electric utility as well... ;)

cordless?
I've heard good things about the Ryobi mower and really all their battery powered tools.

My preference is greenworks. You can cut a good sized yard with 2 batteries (5Ah). DeWalt wouldn’t be a bad choice either. If I could do it again I would get the greenworks commercial 82v 25”.

Ego.
Just get an Ego, I'd get a select cut. The 650cfm blower and the carbon one piece shaft trimmer are super nice too.

You’ll never replace the power of a corded mower.

I have a ryobi 20in lawnmower. It's the non self propelled/40v variety.
My yard is about 5000sqft ish.
My battery lasts about an hour before, I have to switch batteries. I might get 45mins if it's wet grass or thick. But I'm overall happy with it. Convenient, no mixing, garage doesn't smell like gas, and startup with the press of the button every time.
Like you, I went with ryobi because I already have a bunch of ryobi power tools and now have a bunch of additional lawn tools(blower, pole saw, edger, trimmer, etc.).
I don't know what all dewalt offers in their lawn line up but if you think you might want more than just a mower, then may want to look to see what all you would be able to have with their system. People like ego a lot as well for lawn equipment.
The only thing I would say about the dewalt version, is that I don't know what the performance difference would for having two 20v battery vs a 40v battery. I suppose if your yard really isn't that big, it probably won't matter too much.

Can it not cut 5000 sq/ft in an hour?

Well it's not self propelled, so I guess it depends how fast I'm walking or running . Plus my yard isn't square. I usually mow the yard in 30-45mins, so I never need to switch to a new unless it's wet or tall grass.
I'm just saying my battery time is about an hour when mowing normally maybe a little less if it's wet or tall grass.

Spend the money and get the Ego.
It's very much worth it. As are all their tools.
How big is your yard?

I gotcha. I was thinking it took more than an hour to do 5000. Not the best selling feature if so.

Grass is less tha half an acre. Takes a hr to cut w the gasser. Lots of turns so it is a little time consuming

Have an ego and can’t tell a difference between my old gas Honda, it’s nice to just throw the battery on the charger instead of having to go fill up the gas can

Update on my battery lawnmower -
My gas mower died this spring and I looked at Ego, Kobalt, Ryobi but went w/ walk behind dewalt because batteries are compatible w/ my tools. My report after a 6 weeks is it cuts the grass fine, bags it, if needed. Two 20v batteries w/ lots of left over juice after cutting long grass. Only drawback I see is that when bagging it doesnt have the suction that gas does - may be an issue in the fall when leaves are thick. Dewalt/Home Depot have 90 day money back period so if I dont like it in the next month back it goes and I get a gas model.
Right now I think I will keep it - no gas, oil changes etc are positives

Go to Costco and get the greenworks bundle.
Mower, Weed Eater, Blower for about $350 and comes with two batteries

Bought a dewalt self-propelled a few months ago. Love it.

Nice.
I have a Ryobi 42” zero turn on order to arrive in 2 weeks. Gonna attach a Brinly lawn sweeper to it to grab leaves. Can’t wait. My mow-able area is about 2 acres. I’ll update on performance when I get it.

Update on my dewalt cordless lawnmower - Part deux
My report after a 10 weeks is the dewalt battery life was great but cuts grass like crap, uneven and didnt have enough suction to pull grass up and cut it.
So returned the dewalt to the orange big box store and trying a Ryobi 40v brushless model. So far it cuts much better than the dewalt, battery life is good (it takes me 50 min to cut my yard)

Can't beat a gas mower unless you have a dime sized yard

My mother has one for when her yard man is behind schedule or out of town.
I've used it before and it gets the job done, but I thought it sucked. Make sure you have enough batteries to get the yard done without having to stop to recharge for a few hours.
FYI:
Her yard including the house is about.2 of an acre
