Confirm I'm not a dipshit: how do I install this tub drain?

The cross members of the old tub drain were broken so I was able to use a crescent wrench and some leverage to get it out.
I went to Home Depot and picked up a standard tub drain, 1 1/2". When I got the old drain out, it fit straight into the plumbing with no bushing because it looks to be about 1 7/8" diameter.
Before i frick something up, can someone confirm I'm installing the new one correctly by putting the new bushing into the threads of the plumbing, then the new drain with some plumber's putty on the threads?

Plumbing underneath tub
New drain with seal and bushing. The white bushing fits within the threads of the pipe underneath the tub.

You shouldn’t need that white piece. Plumbers putty then screw it in

That white piece is so it can be used with 2 different drain sizes. Don't use it if it fits without it unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

It doesn't fit without the white piece, so I'll have to use it. My question is do I install the white piece to the pipe underneath then use plumbers putty to put the chrome piece in, or install the chrome piece and white piece all at once with putty?
Also, if the rubber seal underneath the tub is in good shape i can just leave the old one in right? No need to pry it out and install the new one?

Pretty sure I didn't use the rubber bushing. Just plumbers putty. I installed this same one in an emergency when I first moved into my house a month ago. Left the bushing on the unit first then screwed whole thing into the drain.
I'm no plumber though but it is working fine.

This is what seemed intuitively right to me. Plumbers putty around the bottom lip of the chrome and screw the whole thing into the drain

Update: plumbers putty and the old rubber seal worked fine. Screwed the whole thing in, white piece and chrome, all at once
Thanks, H&G

Just for odd trivia, are you aware that typical code for a tub drain is 1 1/2", whereas code for a shower drain is 2".
