I scalped my lawn down to one inch, using my rotary mower, on July 31. We were getting lots of rain at the time and used the time to get the grass under control and decided to scalp. Fast foward to today and I am not seeing any changes from when I scalped as the brown spots are not filling in. We haven’t gotten any rain in about 10 days and I can’t water like I should because it’s to big to water. Did I screw up or will things be ok once it starts to rain again? I usually mow every 2 days. Should I skip a mow to allow it to get some growth or just continue to train it back to 1.25 inches?

Rule no. 1 for Bermuda, especially common - Never panic

It’s gonna be ok.
Do you have army worms?
Still, it’s going to be ok…

Dont worry. Once we get some rain again it’ll bounce back

Should I still cut as usual or not? Should I put down some fertilizer? I spray 1/2 pound per 1k of 46-0-0

You’ll want to water a bit more if you continue high rates of fert.

Since you can’t cover the whole area I’d either wait or go light on N.

Should I continue cutting as normal or should I give it a few extra days to get more growth?

Mow as normal. I’d shy away from scalping at 1 inch because that’s not really a scalp. Scalping for Bermuda means cutting to dirt. What you did was mow all the green off therefore your Bermuda will regrow from the root system. This is the exact same thing that would happen from a dirt scalp. The difference is you would see green at .5 inches but you’ll have to wait until it’s 1.25 inches.

Please don’t follow Bermuda lawn dominators advice on Facebook. I don’t know if you got any advice from them. There are some very knowledgeable people but most are clueless and still giving advice.

The reason I mention BLD is because they always post about a midsummer hoc reset which is so stupid if it isn’t needed.

Thanks ronk. I did get info from there and the reason I only cut down 1 inch was because my rotary mower wouldn’t go any lower. I was getting a washboard look because my reel mower was starting to float a little.
When I sand level next year, do you suggest that I scalp lower or just go at 1 inch again put sand then back at 1.25? What I had originally planned on doing was cut at 1.25, add sand, then once growth was good, continue cutting at 1.25. I know you deal with this, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Put a sprinkler on it if lack of rain is your concern

Are you still recommending the Bermuda bible?

I’m about to switch from st aug to Bermuda and want to make sure I have the right chemicals laid in before I do my renovation.

I was attacked by the army worms for the first time. I couldn’t understand why my yard was browning despite being watered. I came home to a flock of birds in my yard. I found out why soon enough. The circle of life, I suppose.

I’ve never read the Bermuda bible. I’ve seen a few posters link it. Bermuda is so easy. Don’t stray from mow often, fert, water, aerate.
