Central Air Freshner Project
So, I started a little project the other day of making a air freshner to go in my central air return duct.

I have a small Programmable logic controller from a place I used to work at, so I thought why not put it to use.

I have written a program to sense when the central air fan is on. When it comes on it will cut on a computer fan in a small box mounted in the return duct that has scent blocks in it. Then based on some switch inputs the fan in the box will run for a certain amount of time (1,2, or 3 minutes is what I have it set for right now) and then cut off.

Then when the AC fan cuts off and back on or has been running longer than 30 minutes the program will start over and run the scent fan again.

Think itll be pretty cool when I get finished.

I'm using a broken small ceramic heater that I've gutted for the box. I'll take pics when I finish with it.

re: Central Air Freshner Project
It's made by a small company called Velocio.

www.velocio.net

It's their ace 22. 12 digital in, 12 digital out.

It's funny you posted this because I've been thinking of trying something very similar over the last few days.

I have to get a AC to DC conveter since the central air fan line is 24V AC

I'd use an arduino if I was buying one though, instead of the velocio plc.

scent blocks

you are way way overthinking this

all you have to do is just toss the scent blocks in, or hang an air freshener, in the r/a shaft and call it a day

no need to reinvent the wheel here

re: Central Air Freshner Project
Maybe, but the main reason I want to do it is so I can put like 5 blocks in there and not have to change it out often. If the fan blows over them all the time its gonna be too strong.

Plus in the summer and winter the fan runs alot more than in the spring and fall... so it wouldn't be consistent.

im not talking put it in the unit, you put it in the return air shaft on the floor behind the filter. it fills the shaft with scent when the unit is off and then spreads it through the house when it runs. since its indirect draft it wont use them up very fast at all. in fact it will last longer then in your method.

if your filter is mounted on the ceiling then just add a small shelf inside the box in the top corner so its not in the direct air path

just add a block, or half a block, each month when you clean/replace the air filter

This sounds like a solution in search of a problem, but since you're all in already...

If your scent blower is tied to the A/C fan kicking on/off, then you'll have this problem either way. Your box will run more when the A/C runs more, so your house will smell twice as fresh in summer/winter than in spring/fall.

It does sound like a cool idea, if a little excessive.

I just squirt a little lemon essential oil on my air return filter, house smells like June Cleaver's vagina 10 minutes later

t you had the PLC but a simple relay setup would be much simpler and easy to customize. JMHO

I have an automatic air freshener hung near my air return. Use the citrus spray. Gets sent throughout the house and isn't overpowering. I mounted the sprayer to the wall with 2 screws and it just hangs on them like a picture frame does.
