I have been having some brown spots in my front lawn. From what I can find, it seems to be brown patch. What I read about it is that it happens when it's most humid.

Being that the weather is about to change, would it be best to just leave it alone now, and the problem will fix itself? Or would I still need to treat it?

If so, what would be best to use on it?

This maybe belongs on the outdoor board. If so, please move.

Treat it. Use Disease X by Scotts.

Brown patch will only get worse if left untreated. Use appropriate fungicide to stop the spread of the disease.

With the hot, dry weather, it could be chinch bugs causing the damage. You would need an insecticide if that is your problem.

In hot summer, it may be chinch bugs. They kill the grass in brown patches like this:

Brown patch fungus tends to hit around here in the fall, especially if it is a wet one. LSU says (linked below): "is most likely to be observed when temperatures are below 80°F. Infection is triggered by rainfall, excessive irrigation, or extended periods of high humidity resulting in the leaves being continuously wet for 48 hours or more. That’s why it’s important to NOT water the lawn in the evenings or night."

LSU Ag Center has info:

Thanks. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. Maybe someone can help me identify which of the two it is.

Those are pics. Can you tell from looking if it's brown patch, those bugs, or something else?

If you can't tell from pics, how can I figure it out?

Those same patches hit my yard almost yearly, and I always assumed it was the dog's pee that caused them.

I will be following this thread to see responses.

My dog rarely, if ever, pees in the front yard where those spots are. His spot is the neighbors fence pole or the long grass in the empty lot behind the yard. So I'm 99.999% positive it's not from my dog piss.

Just from the pics, it doesn't look typical for brown patch. Brown patch generally forms irregular circles takes some time to kill the grass blades.....but it could still be fungi. Since it's such a small area, treat with fungicide and insecticide. If the problem persists, its a dog.

The LSU link I posted above on chinch bugs tells you how to test for them with soapy water. You can also look at videos on the "float test" using a large can with the top and bottom cut out.

If it's not the bugs, hit it with a decent fungicide spray and see if that stops it from spreading.

My first thought was dog piss. If not yours a neighbor or someone who walks their dog. Once they find a spot that’s it, they’ll pee until it’s dead. I’m trying to train my dog to pee in a certain spot. They have killed a 15x15 patch of my zoysia.

I have seen those motion sprinklers. Might be worth a try if it is dogs.

After I said that I was 99% sure it wasn't the dog, I remembered that was just when I take him out. The SO just waits on the porch for him to piss right there where it's brown a lot of the time. So, it's probably dog piss.

Follow him with a hose or find another spot. Nothing else works. Save your money.

Like other posters have said, chinch bugs are more than likely going to be your culprit. I had LSU AG come to my house a couple weeks ago over rapidly spreading brown patches. It turned out to be chinch bugs. I thought it was brown patch and he informed me brown patch doesn’t occur this time of year.

I put out Talstar Verge granules and the grass is slowly growing back, but I am going to have to put sod down, bc I have so much damage. They work extremely fast.
