I guess what I should be asking: is there a way to find out what my unit is currently capable of right now and if so, where do I find out? The furnace I have came with the house, so I have no idea what I'm looking for.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If your filter return grills accommodate 1 inch thick filters your best bet is use a spun fiberglass MERV 4 filter and change it monthly. Like these LINK. Those will have minimal restriction on air flow to the furnace/air handler. You can spray the filter with Web filter charger to help it better attract particulate matter. LINK
Remember the main purpose of the filter is to protect the HVAC equipment not improve IAQ for the occupants. If your system can accommodate a 2 inch, 4 inch or 5 inch thick filter then as stated by others you can use a higher MERV pleated or media filter, MERV 8 or maybe higher, with minimal airflow restriction to the equipment, while also improving IAQ for the occupants.

Orange and white merv 8 media
That media is tacky and really does well on all dust. When i changed out my 22 year old system last year, the blower wheel could not have been cleaner and I never touched it outside of replacing the ICM motor twice. I get that stuff precut from a local filter house and buy about two years worth at a time. I did cut some black foam tape and put on the filter grilles face that the metal rack sits against for increased sealing. You can probably beat the Amazon price.

I'd equate it to a service that ships me a roll of toilet paper every other day.

They make permanent metal ones don't they?
I believe they're quite a bit more expensive than the disposable ones, but you just wash them off to clean them and put them back in.
Found some on Amazon. Not sure what to think about them though.

Doubt any of these places beat Home Depot. I think I pay $4 or $5 for 24x30

Yeah, figured someone would chime in who've tried them out...
My neighbor, in the HVAC business, traded me a big case of filters for some tomatoes out of my garden.
I don't have to worry about filters for a little bit..

Right but are we talking about air flow or trapping more due to being restrictive. I use the cheapest ones and they barely get dirty likely because I run a few hepa filters in the house. My carrier also uses 2 huge accordion air filters inside of the unit.
