The 56V 5Ah battery for my Ego blower and trimmer decided to just fail on me today after only 3 years.... 3 YEARS! (and guess what the warranty is on it)

and the replacement battery is $250!

i expected the battery to just not hold as much charge over a long period of time but the thing just failed outright somewhere in the built in controller

the equipment worked beautifully and did it's job just as good as gas powered.... but the chinese shite doesn't last

going buy gas powered

Before you give up, look for an aftermarket battery.

ETA - Here's one for $85.

I might burn $10-15 worth of gas in my mower per year and the last one lasted me 13 years.

Unless you doing it for environmental reasons I just don't see the point of battery powered.

That about the life of battery powered equipment. Some may last more and some less. 3 yrs is avg.

Pahahahaha but people think we will be driving nothing but electric cars in 5-10 years. The internal combustion engine feeds the world and there is no technology today to replace it no matter how much people want to be green.

True. Power density, durability, and reliability favors ICE in most applications and probably most so in lawn and garden equipment. I have a small yard but still have all 4-stroke and 2-stroke equipment, it outperforms even the best cordless equipment available. Especially as the temperatures drop, told my dad to put the charger and battery for the Echo 56V blower I got him inside from the garage. It will work better and help the overall lifespan of the battery. I know for certain people that either have no interest or capacity to maintain yard equipment that cordless stuff is the better choice, but it comes with a cost one way or another.

Eh.

Convenience mostly. I have a small yard. I don't have to worry about getting gas, storing gas, mixing gas and oil for some equipment. Don't have to worry about storing/maintence/changing oil/messing with carburetor etc when I can't get it to start on the first pull.(you may have had good success for 13 years, but the last gas mower I had only lasted 5 years before crapping out).

I haven't had a battery go out on me yet(I'm sure I will), but that same battery also supplies my pole saw, hedger, trimmer and various power tools. So I consider a split cost amongst all of the equipment, which for the added convenience makes it worth it to me.

Look right now the technology only 3 years avg for handheld products. Technology is getting better and the price is coming down.

Now zero turns, riding mowers, and lawn tractors it is about 8 to 10 yrs which you will see for sale in 2021 that will be commonly sold at retailers and dealers. You are paying more for the unit and the battery technology more expensive.

Tricks to keep battery powered lasting longer is to keep the battery charged when not in use.
I am not saying over charge it just make sure the battery is fully charged when sitting up. You do lose some power sitting up over the winter, so once a month charge the battery during this period.

The above can go along way toward helping to get that battery to last.

Sold a few this year as it still a niche product.

Sold a few to a few small yard property owners that do not want to deal with gas products.

Sold one Lawn tractor to a lady that cuts up to 2 acres of a residential lawn.
She does not want to deal with gas powered lawn tractor maintenance.

The category is growing just not the dominant product line at this time.

Ego has some of the most expensive batteries on the market. They are fairly new as far as battery powered equipment goes. I don’t think they even have a power tool line yet. Once aftermarket batteries hit the market it will be a game changer. I have an Ego blower and that thing is a beast. Not sure why people opt for the mower because it’s not like you have to stretch an extension cord out there to operate a gas one

I care about the environment, but I'm also realistic and not an idiot.

Battery powered stuff doesn't last and the batteries are bad for the environment too. How much damage is done to the environment when they constantly have to make new ones cause they dont last?

I have one battery for my Ego blower that is almost 4 years old with no appreciable degradation. I have an extremely small yard and love my ego mower as well. Like someone said no gas to store etc. and my favorite is I can fold up the handle and stand it upright

Less than ones that require drilling, extracting, refining and shipping oil?

Lol. You’ve carved out a pretty narrow scope of analysis there.

I also burn about that much gas in my mower each year.

But what I got tired of was oil changes, filters, spark plugs, pull starting, diagnosing why it’s not starting and so on.

I’ve slowly gone battery powered using the Ego line to replace my edger, string trimmer, and leaf blower. I absolutely love just being able to pull a tool off the wall rack, popping in a battery and it just works . It works pretty fricking great too. I’m getting the same yard work done in much less time. I am much more likely to pull out the leaf blower and clear my walkways now than I ever was before in the gas powered era (or even during the corded electric era). And not a lick of time consuming routine maintenance.

Go look up lithium mining and processing and try that thought process again.
