About to start a build and putting prices together. I've always been told to make sure I go with quality custom cabinets but this honestly isn't something I'm stuck on. I don't want particle board but solid oak cabinets isn't something I've prioritized. I'm honestly fine with some prefab stuff. Anyone do this and regret it? Anyone go custom and realize it wasn't that big of deal?

If your carpenter is good and you get what you want, don’t look back. We have custom cypress cabinets. They are just cabinets, but I’m proud of them and they look good.

I dont regret it, if you are painting them, go prefab. Mine are stained custom, but i honestly cant tell the diff between them and my prefab at my camp. Maybe Im retarded, thats a good possibility too

The boxes really don't matter, once they reach a certain level of quality there isn't much difference. It is not like guys are making dovetail boxes that will never be seen anymore. They are gluing and pinning them together.

Lots of custom makers have gone to ordering doors from on of the big companies in North Carolina, they have mastered making the doors fast and they use good wood. Having quality prefab vs locally custom isn't a big deal any longer. I will probably build my boxes and order fronts for my next home. I am going to do some cabinets in my house soon to replace the originals from the 50's in the bathrooms. They are solidly built but over the years getting wet from time to time they are a little soft on the bottom. If they weren't I would just be replacing the doors. I am going to make these doors but the wife wants a basic shaker/midcentury look and those are super simply and will match the period of our house.

I regret having custom cabinets made. We tried to save money by having CNC’d raised panel fronts made and I hate them.

I bought out of the box cabinets and people walk into my kitchen and are wowed. Do not waste your money on custom. I had 62 cabinets that cost me less that 10k. Four years later they look great.

My previous house had custom cabinets. The house that I have now are builders grade cabinets from Lowes or Home Depot. I hate them, but they work.

I think prebuilt are danged close in quality at a moderate price point.

We just built and I had a builder quote both ways. The savings was about 8K. (34k vs 42K). My builder whined until I agreed to do custom. They are nice but I think about that 8K sometimes...LOL
