my wife is on a kick about this lately and i dont need some baw in an escalade to stop by and say 'you need new ducts' and start that conversation..

yep, these ducts were put in decades ago. no, i am not budgeting replacing them anytime soon.

what kind of equipment do you need to clean your ducts? is this a non-starter? i feel like anyone giving us a $199 duct cleaning special is ABSOLUTELY going to find $$$$ that needs to be done when they come out.

eta she thinks there's an odor (i think she's crazy); can i just spray some lemon oil or something down there?

If you replace your filters regularly and run your HVAC, you shouldn't need them cleaned for a very long time. Have an HVAC technician do a service and tell you if they need cleaning or not.

This scam has been running rampant the last year or so.

Can't help you with the scent

Most of them are scams.

Here is a really detailed explanation of what to look for and when duct cleaning is recommended. Spoiler: almost never.

https://www.epa.gov/indoor-air-quality-iaq/should-you-have-air-ducts-your-home-cleaned

A few other links for your perusal, the first also gives the short answer to if duct cleaning is worthwhile

quote:

Generally, duct cleaning is not worth the money except for a few rare and extenuating circumstances, such as:

Substantial mold is visibly growing in your ducts
Vermin or rodents have infested your vents
Ducts are clogged to the point that debris and dust particles are being released into your home

the hvac at this house has been upgraded at least twice (probably more than that) since the house was built in 1978.

i have no records as to whether ductwork was included with any of those updates so i may be a prime candidate.

definitely lots of scary stuff was found during the demolition of the kitchen & when we ripped all the carpet out in the entire house & put wood down so there's part of me that thinks its worth having a peek at the inside of the ducts.

just don't want to pay someone if there's nothing to be done.

the AC works fine. not sure what cleaning the ducts would actually do for us.

As I stated in the other thread on ducts, was able to visually inspect the inside of my 30 year old rigid ducts with a HVAC changeout last year including a new air supply plenum, and the insides were pristine.

If you I wouldn’t clean them unless it was warranted. If your wife is insistent on spending $ on HVAC to improve IAQ install a Reme Halo or comparable.

Taking a look is not a bad thing. But short of mold or rodent droppings I wouldn't pay anyone to clean the ducts.

If you can get ahold of a borescope/endoscope you can check them out yourself before you get someone in.

you could buy an inexpensive one from Amazon

If it is sheet metal ducts then chances are there was no need to replace them.

It depends on a few things. Do you have flex or rigid ducts? Have you done any major construction with lots of dust lately? Do you have floor or ceiling registers? How often do you change your filter?

If you have flex ducts with ceiling registers and you change your filter often, then you will be wasting money.

we just purchased the house on jan 1 and did hella construction.

we have a massive intake (24x36) which i replaced on the wall and swapped filters like crazy during construction.

however, we don't know anything from the period: 1978-Dec 2023

a long time for ducts to exist in an unknown state.

My rule of thumb: if dust, etc is not dirtying your registers and/or ceiling adjacent thereto your ducts are probably clean enough.

My downstairs ducts are on the floor (older house) and we bought the house from an old couple that were nasty cat people and had lived there for 30 years. I also don't think they used the HVAC much to save money. I had them cleaned and he showed me what came out and I was fricking mortified. A couple petrified mice, more than enough cat hair to fill a 30 gallon garbage can, etc.

That said, outside of a situation like that, I don't think you need to do it much, if ever, if you are a clean person, run your system fairly consistently, and change your filters.

ETA:

I knew the hair was a problem because when I cranked on the AC it shot up in a clump onto the duct vent grate and stuck there, then fell back down when the air shut off

I think their cats liked to lay on the vents. I know my dogs do in the Summer

Just a theory.

I also had to rip out part of the sub floor in a guest room because of the largest concentration of cat urine in the Northern Hemisphere. And that shite doesn't just go away.

I paid some jabroneys to clean my ductwork a couple of years back. They got a ton of shite out of them. However, I couldn’t tell any difference in air quality after I had it done. I won’t be doing this again.
