Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket brand spindles? The Scag OEM costs around $290 while a Oregon brand is only $60. Both are greaseable. There is nothing wrong with the Scag currently on my mower, but the bolt for the blade is stuck on. I am thinking about picking up a new spindle and replacing it incase I am unable to remove the blade even with the spindle off the machine and if I can then I have a spare.

Have you tried heat on that bolt?

Not yet, I was planning on pulling the spindle and working it off the machine. So far I have broken a ratchet and put many ugga duggas with the impact with no luck. When I get it off I should be able to remove the bolt but I don't want to chance it and end up without my mower if it is gauled and stuck for good.

you need to use impact gun on it

I bought a aftermarket spindle for my neighbor but I have no idea if he put it on. He isn't good with the internet and asks me to order him parts for his vehicles and lawnmowers all the time.

So yes I bought them, no I have no idea if they work well or not. He hasn't called me up to tell me that they didn't work and I ordered them for him 6 months ago.

Oh I did. the 1/2" Impact didn't even act like it wanted to break that bolt.

Those bolts are usually left handed threads.

in a pinch you can use a 2x4 to wedge the blade against the deck so it cant turn, then use cheater pipe on a big ratchet to break it loose.

another thing is the shaft will come out of the spindle if you remove the nut from the pulley side then it drops out of the spindle with the blade still attached. then you can put it in a vice or use a torch on it

Either your impact gun or air pressure(if pneumatic) isn’t up to task, or the threads are gaulded. Try using anti seize on the threads next time.

I don't have any experience with the aftermarket spindles but penetrating oil and heat are your friend. I'm a fan of Seafoam Deep Creep.

Did you cross thread the nut on the blade bolt?I have a Scag and I’ve never had any trouble getting the nuts off the blade bolts.I have a Kobalt electric impact I use.
My air impact won’t remove them,my compressor isn’t big enough to deliver enough air.

My scag patriot has right hand threaded bolts that secure the blades.

Does the blade bolt on your Scag mower run through the bottom and the top of the spindle with a nut at the top?

I have a Scag Turf Tiger, and that's how each of the three blades are secured.

I once had a neighbor who tried to replace the blades on my mower. He wound up rounding the head of each bolt at the bottom of all three spindles.

With my mower, all I did to solve my problem was to use a hack saw to cut off the head of the blade bolt on all three spindles and buy three replacement blade bolts with nuts to secure a new blade to each spindle on my mower.

Heat cycle it with a small welding torch a few times. Keep hitting it with PB blaster or transmission fluid (my preference for stuck bolts). Pop it with tightening torque and loosening torque a few times backwards and forwards each time. Good chance it will come loose in a few days or a week.

Done this a number of times and it works. Once you get it out you can clean up threads very well and will be good to go. Of course for $60 it is hard to go wrong if you can grease them.

Mixed half and half with kroil is the ultimate woopin shite for breaking stubborn bolts loose.

I still think OP was turning them the wrong way though. Aint no way a half inch impact oughta not get them off.

Not sure on the spindles. I have a turf tiger 52” old school deck. All my nuts on top of the blade bolts are right hand thread. I had them get so tight once that I had to block the blades with a board and use a 1/2 in. Breaker bar and a 3 ft. Cheater pipe to break them loose. They had never seize on them and I’ve only had it happen once. A 1/2 in impact would come close to unscrewing them. I hope this helps.

They are right handed threads and I was turning them the correct way. Was using a Dewalt 1/2" cordless impact with a fresh battery. Soaked with Kroil Hit with hammer to shock them as well as went both forwards and backwards on the bolt in the attempt to try and get it moving. I changed the other two without any problem right before this and then broke a ratchet before using the large impact as I usually do this with the 1/4" driver.
